Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot has condemned police tactics to control protesters.

Okay, what's he going to do about it to stop them?

Really disgusting that he's trying to profit off of that killing.

San Lumen wrote:https://kstp.com/minnesota-news/in-11-1-vote-minneapolis-city-council-opposes-use-of-tear-gas-on-protesters/6077655/?cat=1

Minneapolis City Council voted 11-1 to oppose the use of tear gas and other munitions as part of Minnesota's response to protesters.

Good, but now how are they going to enforce it? Usage of tear gas is banned in Brooklyn Center but cops still used it anyway. Cops are above the law and enacting new laws to limit their power doesn't seem to effect them.

In case you haven't noticed American democracy is in rapid freefall. Appeals to how things should function don't mean much anymore.

The Empire is crumbling and the powers that be will get more and more violent to suppress anybody considered a threat to their power - whether internal or external.

Sure - as a first step, maybe. But the whole idea of electing DAs and sheriffs is part of the problem, and should be scrapped at the first opportunity. These positions should be filled based on merit, and there should be no campaigns in order to be elected for such positions. We've seen time and time again that it leads to a race to the bottom where each candidate is trying to be tougher on crime than the other, and that doing the right thing - like releasing people who've been exonerated - is seen as a negative.

Who should be choosing them if they aren’t going to be elected?

Normal hiring processes.

In places where they aren’t elected they are appointed by the chief executive of the jurisdiction.

How would it be different in your system?

I used to go on walks late at night because I was restless and couldn't get to sleep. Nice knowing you think the cops should've executed me for being out late.

Different case, I know:
Daunte Wright's killing was an accident and she meant to tase him. When you resist a legal arrest, that's when things go bad for you, and that's what happened in the heat of the moment.

What's known is that he was carrying a gun and maybe even fired shots from it before discarding it whilst running away. Asides from there being no reason for most people to be out past midnight at latest.

That in no way justifies her actions. If you can’t tell the difference between a taser and a gun you shouldn’t be a cop.

She was also training someone - is someone who mistakes a gun for a taser really a person [edit] who should be [/edit] carrying out training?

Quite a few people, like me, aren't convinced by the "oops I mistook my gun for my taser" line of defense by the woman who's been on the force nearly three decades. Not to mention her past of helping officers cover themselves after killing somebody: When arriving on a scene where two officers were still trying to provide medical aid to somebody they'd shot, "Officer Potter instructed Officers Turner and Akers to exit the residence, get into separate squad cars, turn off their body worn cameras, and to not talk to each other.”

Maybe it was an accident but I don't trust cops, they lie vehemently and often to cover their asses after things like this.

No. I hope the officer they were training chastised her.

It's a free country, people are allowed to be outside past midnight if they want to be. There are plenty of reasons for it as well.

At the end of the day this is pretty much it. Regardless of intention her negligence and-or inability to keep cool in an intense situation resulted in an unnecessary death.

Not for someone that age. Who the hell doesn't wrap things up at around midnight if not a bit before on a weekday? Most people have to get around 7 hours of sleep + time for other stuff to make it to work or their important tasks for the day on time before 9 AM.

My K-12 began at 6 AM, so sleep time is even earlier out of necessity depending on the school.

I'm not saying that it justifies it. I'm saying I don't buy into this narrative that this is some racist attack on the black community. This is not like what happened with George Floyd.

Now this I do agree with. People are indeed painting the shooting as a deliberate hate crime when really it was just reckless incompetence.

There are many unjust shootings that happen with police, but yes, I think there is a political agenda here in this case, one of complete paranoia.
