US Anti-Police Protests and Riots Thread III

Postby Farnhamia » Thu Sep 17, 2020 5:21 pm

THREAD 1
THREAD 2

Source

On May 25, 4 policemen killed George Floyd, who was suspected of forgery. mostly through the process of kneeling on his neck while he pleaded to being unable to breathe. The 4 officers have since been fired. Floyd was unarmed at the time, and died several minutes later at the hospital.

Now, protesters marching against police brutality have gotten into clashes, some violent with police officers.

A video of the arrest can be found here.

At least one person is alleged to have been shot, though the identity of the shooter remains unclear, and another seems to have burned to death in a liquor store.

Outside of Minneapolis, there are also protests in St. Paul, Denver, Chicago, Columbus, and LA.

A related protest has broken out in Louisville, over the death of Breonna Taylor, with 7 shot.

Trump has Threatened to use the National Guard.

Derek Chauvin, the guy who actually had his knee on Floyd’s neck has been arrested and charged with murder.

The charge for D. Chauvin has been upgraded to second degree murder., and the other 3 officers have been charged with aiding and abetting.

What is your standpoint?

The officers arresting George Floyd should not have been charged with murder. - 4%

The officers should be charged with murder, but rioting is unjustified. - 44%

Rioting is justified, looting is not. - 33%

Both rioting and looting are justified. - 19%
The police should be.....
Abolished - 16%

Defunded -12%

Have its funding reduced - 20%

Privatised - 5%

None of the above - 47%

What about it? If the previous OP wants to own this one, they can ask and I'll sign it over to them.

Sounds like either a form of protest or bad cops getting out while the getting is good.

Either way, an interesting development.

The NYPD lost $1 billion dollars from its budget this year, and the department has no upcoming police academy classes to bring in new blood to replace officers who have left, officials said.

Really makes you wonder where the remaining budget is going if not to essential services like the Academy.

Paul DiGiacomo, head of the Detective’s Endowment Association, said that his members are leaving because of the growing frustration with bail reform and other criminal justice measures passed by the City Council and in Albany, which are perceived as making it more difficult for officers to do their jobs. Anti-police demonstrations have also hurt morale, he said.

"We are losing a lot of talent, especially in the detective bureau," DiGiacomo said. "Replacing is one thing, learning and teaching is another."

Those losses, which he said have affected 500 seasoned detectives, will trickle down and hurt various specialized units such as special victims and crime scene analysis, which benefit from experienced people.

Shea said there is no prospect of the department getting fresh recruits in the short term since the budget cuts have stalled new hiring. While the NYPD had close to 36,000 uniformed members earlier in the year, the rate of attrition has dropped about 2,000 officers from the rolls, Shea said.

... Bail reform? Really? Really?

Arresting people without cause and with little bail is the problem?

No.
1: Correlation, not causation.
2: Your data is talking about a pattern that happened in the course of the whole first 6 months of the year-but NYC didn’t start cutting the police budgets until July, and the police attrition doesn’t begin until May. That’s 4 full months you can’t account for.

4 full months the police couldn't account for either, ironically enough.

It does make you wonder what the shootings were about though.

I've seen this quote attributed to unknown person and unknown woman. I am enthused to hear she has been promoted to an unnamed leader of BLM from her lowly genderless beginnings.

Yep, the best possible scenario is an understaffed, underpaid police force with limited practical experience.

Seems pretty obvious to me, everything's going to shit so people have less reservations about just killing each other for whatever reason. Especially nowadays I imagine it's pretty easy to get away with that.

Crime has been spiking in Minneapolis as well, much to the chagrin of constituents and members of the local municipal council, who have accused officers of shirking their duty. Budget cuts, declining morale amid protests, and economic woes brought about by rioting and COVID-19 have left Minneapolis strapped for cash and have seen police numbers decline since the George Floyd protests began - with the possibility that permanent retirement and the suspension of upcoming classes will leave the MPD short-staffed, over-worked, and less capable of addressing the ongoing crime spike. 888 officers remain active. 111 are on leave. There's also been growing pressure the last few months to wholly dismantle the MPD.

She probably isn't representative of most BLM activists since the general thrust hasn't been towards "abolish the police" or "kill cops." The reactions do speak very poorly for the people in attendance and cheering her on though.

Do you really think all these protests will stop future police brutality in the US? No! The US is a crime ridden nation and these protests will do nothing to change this. Go after police unions or nothing will change. The police unions protect bad cops.

Mate this is some random woman with a megaphone. Calling her a "leader" is increasing her influence exponentially.
