I've never heard of a "gender reveal" party until now. You guys actually celebrate that kind of thing?

Most Americans don't, usually it's younger, upper-middle class white folks in the suburbs who feel it'll add a certain "flare" to their life. And it does, if flare means a flare-up of brushes catching on fire.

Yeah, usually a "gender reveal" (... and really, it's not truly a gender reveal but a genital reveal) is just part of a baby shower rather than a dedicated event all by itself. But as always, some people have to take things one step (or in the case of the El Dorado fire in SoCal, several steps) too far.

Also, major OOF at the Inciweb map. Also a good central resource for fire information.

Yes and because of smoke inhalation those who catch it are more likely to have serious and deadly cases.

This is a bad time for the states of California and Oregon to catch on fire.

It's not too different from other cities from the times I've visited imo but just all that stuff packed together would be awful. Fires move fast, it wouldn't take long for most of the city to be in flames if it did hit.

Portland is actually surprisingly small for a city. The downtown area is close to the river, and it takes not even 20 minutes to get to areas that are less crowded. That said, living here right now SUCKS!.

It's only got a few hundred thousand people. Not a small town but it ain't Chicago or New York. It's maybe comparable to three Warrens. A moderate sized municipality.

This is a myth. The wildfires have been mostly peaceful.

Well I actually live in one of the wildfire areas and can confirm that they're not peaceful.

To be fair we went to cremate my drug addicted uncle, who was living in the shittiest side of town, just like he did in Chicago and Macon and Phoenix and Cleveland and everywhere else he lived. That would explain alot.

The fires have affected me personally more than the Coronavirus. I've been inside since Thursday and hoping things change by Monday (more on that later).

As for the forecast, they're now predicting changing more favorable conditions between Sunday night and Monday night, depending on the exact area. Hopefully, we'll get some cleaner air. Fingers crossed!

It's been mostly the same across most of the Pacific Northwest. Also, "getting out of here" entails having both somewhere else to go and the means to do it.

I remember that our fires, such as the ones in 2017, happened more in October than September.

Hopefully we don't have another round of fires, or continually have to struggle with them, later in autumn...

Not currently directly affected, but can also confirm. The sight of towering flames on the hills right above your house and bearing down on you is an image that stays with you. It literally took me the better part of 30 years to find a way to confront that sight without turning into a puddle of complete panic after my first taste of it as a little kid.

(Protip: Hiding behind a camera lens helps! Focusing on capturing the shot crowds out the panic, at least for me.)

So I talked to my parents, who live near Seattle, and they tell me they are going to visit Portland. I don't know what they are thinking.

A family friend who lives near Portland was like, "You know what's going on here, right?"

But they're still going...
