This is going to sound like such a cocky or bullshit answer but it’s the truth.

I was doing bong rips.

I fell asleep to Cartoon Network or Comedy Central, woke up to one of the buildings on fire. As far as I could tell it was an accident and after the Oklahoma bombing where the commentators kept saying it was Muslim terrorists and it turned out to be a white dude, they were being really careful about speculating what was going on. Since it seemed like not that big a deal, I decided a little wake n’ bake was in order.

Right about the time I was well and truly stoned I found myself going, “Why is there still a plane in the NY skyline?” And then the second plane hit.

Now of course, since I was baked I can’t be 100% sure when I started watching versus when everything else happened, but that second plane hit really surprised me, making me feel like I watched it live. I may have, but again, stoned.

After that I got up, told my buddy sleeping in the living room to wake up and turn on the TV because the world was ending, then went and took a test then went to work and sold Glitter soundtracks that came out that day trying to tell people “No one is going ‘first New York and Washington, then an outdoor mall in the suburbs of the East Bay.’”

I believe my dad was at work within the trades at IBEW, but I don’t remember well. However, I have no idea what my mother was doing. Both were just past graduation (4 and 2 years after graduation from high school) and neither had been to New York previously so they didn’t know the importance until it was too late.

Despite this, once they got married in August 2003, they went to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon. ...I was born in December 2004.

Or even worse, imagine being someone who just happens to look arab (like a sicilian or a Sikh or an Armenian or a Greek or Sephardi Jew) and knowing you'll be blamed for shit no one from your ethnic group or religious group was involved in.

I had recently moved from the UK to take up a research fellowship at a university in Melbourne, Australia. I had only just moved into a new house, and the dial-up internet connection had only been in place for a week or so. I was reading the BBC news website late at night in bed before going to sleep, and saw in the news that a plane had flown into the World Trade Centre. I remember thinking something along the lines of 'what a terrible accident; will check that tomorrow morning' while picturing something like this. Just before turning the laptop off for the night, I saw that a second plane had crashed into the other WTC tower; that had me going 'oh-oh', and thinking it was something more serious. But it was late, I was sleepy, and I didn't stay up.

About 7:00 am the next morning, as I was getting up, my house mate came home. He said 'have you seen the news'; he had been up all night at a friend's house. We then sat down and watched the footage. I managed to drag myself away and go to work, but I don't think any of us really felt like working, despite how far away we were from the events.

So much of the drama happened while I was asleep on the other side of the world.

I was a mod at a game company back then. One of the people was having a freak out about his GF who was visiting the towers for work. Helped track her down and found she got caught up in a crowd running. My sister and a couple friends worked there....just not that day......

In a car with my mom driving to a Safeway apparently, but I don't remember it at all.

My dad, on the other hand, was on a business trip and had just entered Manhattan. He was six blocks away and he still retells how not a single cab would pick him up in the resulting pandemonium. He ended up frantically walking from Foley Square all the way to Midtown before he could get any information on why the towers had just fallen. He wasn't in the line of danger, per se, being enough blocks away to see it but not feel it, but I know he still feels nightmarish about the whole day.
