I wasn’t born yet, but my Dad was out hunting at the time and didn’t have cell phone signal or anything. He told me that he remembered noticing that something was wrong when, within the next couple days, he stopped seeing and hearing planes in the sky. He had no idea what was happening until he got home.

Dude probably thought the apocalypse had arrived.

I have an emergency evacuation kit mounted next to my front door that contains a smoke mask and goggles that is originally from the offices of Lehman Brothers. Friend of mine worked there and gave it to me awhile back. I thought it was a nifty gift at first and then I realized why it existed.

I was in bed with my wife of just over a year; the clock radio had just gone off and NPR was reporting a plane had crashed into one of the towers. I imagined it must have been something small. I turned on the TV when I got downstairs and saw the damage. After a quick shower I was brushing my teeth, watching, when the second plane hit. Afterwards the coverage cut away to Washington, DC, where I used to work, with a shot from the National Press Club past the Old Executive Office Building of something burning on the Virginia side. "That's the Pentagon," I said. Oh boy, right again. (A friend of mine who was still in DC had had a meeting scheduled on that side of the Pentagon that morning; it was cancelled at the last minute, otherwise he would have been there.)

I drove to work and watched on a colleague's TV as the first tower collapsed. Returning home I hugged my wife and said, "peace be to us and to our house." Air traffic over our Midwestern city had stopped but later that night we could hear the F-15s patrolling.

Each September 11th since then when I check the front door to see that it's locked I say, "peace be to us and to our house."

Those attacks cost 3,000 lives that day, including the hijackers'. So far in the US nearly 200,000 have died from the coronavirus.

I have to disagree with that. I was born like 4 years after it happened. And I cry a lot on that day.
