Remembering Nelson Mandela being in prison and the USSR existing is the cutoff point for old.

Or even worse, imagine being someone who just happens to look arab (like a sicilian or a Sikh or an Armenian or a Greek or Sephardi Jew) and knowing you'll be blamed for shit no one from your ethnic group or religious group was involved in.

I live just outside the NYC metro area, essentially where commuters live. So it's never been uncommon for me to meet people who knew someone or almost knew someone who lost their lives that day. Most people older than I remember it clearly, too.
Both of y’all are a lot younger than I thought.
Again I’m realizing I’m old

The shameful irony is I heard of a Sioux native that was harassed and told to go back where they came from shortly after 9/11. And I can attest other people I have known in my life were subjected to similar bigotry just for looking vaguely like an Arab.

How does someone mistake a native American for an arab? Are we as a country that dumb?
Reminds me of the time my friend tyler couldn't tell the difference between my girlfriend who was an Arab and a girl who was a cousin of a friend of mine who is Albanian. And they don't look anything alike. One is my height and has black hair and skin that ranges from cream to dark brown depending on the season and the other was normal female height (like 5'4) and had dirty blonde hair and olive skin.

I used to wonder what it was like being Muslim and waking up and knowing that like 25 to 50% of people hate you for stupid reasons.
Now I realize that I don't gotta imagine being muslim to know how that feels, cause that's how it is being most minority groups in the US except for asians and maybe Jewish people.

9/11 is in the same place in my heart as the massacres of genghis khan, American slavery, the holocaust, the Bosnian genocide, the Irish potato famine, the destruction of the native Americans, and every other bad event that happened too long ago for me to get super emotional over. 9/11 was awful, but I'm not one of these people out here still swearing revenge against the arabs 19 years later. I honestly get annoyed with how much people obssess over it after all these years. It's like pearl harbor to me.

I probably would have been asleep when the actual attack happened but I found out about it on the way to school the next morning (September 12th in our timezone) when it was talked about on the radio.
Except - it wasn't the top story. The top story was the sports scores and the radio announcer at the end literally said, "In other news, today marks the first attack on America since Pearl Harbour, two planes have crashed into the twin towers in New York. So John, what do you make of the coach's decision in the rugby last night?"
It was enough that I remember my dad being like "Wait are they joking? What's going on?"
