Some kind of uprising is brewing in West Papua (which is controlled by Indonesia). If Australia's government doesn't have anything to say about that, it would be disturbing.

Australia can say whatever she wants about it. What do you want Australia to actually do about it

True. But at the same time, you don't wanna piss off the Indonesians, they can cut off our shipping/trading routes. Why do you think we give them so much aid? Kindness of our hearts?

I'm confused. Australia tells China things they don't want to hear, despite them being a major trading partner, also greater military power. But when it comes to Indonesia, Australia pays them off with aid and won't utter a squeak, because they're close by?

It's about refugees isn't it.

Because we’ve totally never stood up to Indonesia before...

Of course, Morrison is nowhere even remotely close to being in the same league as Howard.

Indonesia is a strategic partner of Australia. After our involvement in East Timor, telling them to get out of West Papua too would be ill-advised. We should support peaceful negotiation, but we can't be the ones to lead the charge if we don't want to alienate our neighbour.
We're in the opening stages of a new Cold War between China and the Western Powers; we call out China's systematic human rights abuses primarily because it helps frame China as comparable to Mao's period China, Stalin era Soviet Union and even to Nazi Germany. It's not a stretch of the imagination to make any of these comparisons either. China is not democratic, not a liberal society, not a free market economy by any stretch nor a social market comparable to that of Germany or France. It's not a power that, particularly under Xi Jinping's rule, we want influencing global politics. We keep making the case that we don't have to choose between the US and China and to an extent now that's true because China chose for us; and they chose....poorly.

Merry Christmas

.....
I don't know.
I know it's an international issue, but I'd think somebody'd say "hey, that's not OK" within the Govt,
or go to a summit (i know it's not the biggest, most high priority thing, but still) with Indonesia
over what the Indonesian government's doing.

Anyhoo,
Merry Christmas, my fellow NationStaters. :)

Worst Politician?

Postby Amorosa-Coonarra Coasts » Sun Dec 27, 2020 9:39 pm

Who's the worst politician in Australia?

For me, it's a tie between Joh-Bjelke Petersen, Fraser Anning, Pauline and *no surprises* Clive.

Oh, and might as well add Dutton in too, 'cos why not.

Everyone you listed is bad, but Fraser Anning was in a class of his own. That he was ejected from KAP for being too extreme says it all.

How did Bligh lose this badly??!!

To be fair I keep wondering how the Labor Party keeps winning in Queensland. Like its a super conservative state from what I can tell and almost all of its seats in the HoR went to the LNP last election. So that was probably an expected outcome. And then one wonders too "how did Campbell Newman lose the second time around?"

Now that China has stopped buying our food and coal, there are huge food shortages and huge power outages, and people aren't allowed to turn their power on, unless the temperature falls below a certain level. China is now begging Australia to mend their relationships with us so we can get back to trading together. I would have the shits with Scomo if he were to give into them. Let them come crawling back to us. They need us more than we need them. Thank God the LNP's in charge federally, I could see the ALP bending over backwards for them. Many people told Jodi McKay when she posted on Facebook about how racist it was to criticide the CCP, and I completely embarrassed her in that post. She memory-holed that post within a couple of hours
