US sanctions International Criminal Court officials

Postby An Alan Smithee Nation » Sat Sep 05, 2020 4:12 am

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-54003527

The US has imposed sanctions on senior officials in the International Criminal Court (ICC), including chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused the court of "illegitimate attempts to subject Americans to its jurisdiction".

The Hague-based ICC is currently investigating whether US forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan.

I think this is one of the worst things that the US has done under Trump, it just tarnishes the use of sanctions by the US, and sets a precedent for countries like China to follow suit with international bodies they don't agree with.

This isn't really a Trump specific thing tbf. The Bomb The Hague Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. We as a nation pretty openly don't care for international law.

Isn’t Afghanistan party to the ICC statute? If so war crimes committed in Afghanistan come under the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Why are they acting like Americans aren't subject to jurisdiction? It's called the International Criminal Court, not the Every Continent and Region with the Exception of North American Criminal Court.

What a bunch of self-entitled twits.

Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.

Which itself is pretty god damn stupid. It boggles my mind how we try to be world police, and then refuse to abide by international law. It genuinely makes no sense.

Worse still, the American government actively helped her evade justice and tried to bribe the teen's family.

Well I doubt that will stop the court investigating. But it might make some witnesses refuse to appear.

"Police need immunity" makes no sense to me. Why shouldn't police on-duty be charged for crimes they commit?

The US isn't the world police either. More like a drug addict who puts on a police uniform when he needs to go mug someone to buy more crack. "Don't fight back sir or I'll use my immunity on you"

not only is the u.s. not 'in the right', this is a hostile criminal act against all of humanity. for which donald trump should be halled before the hage to face war crimes.
for a world to be fair it needs to be impartial, and being impartial means finding some what to stop giving a free pass to the power of brute force.
i see no difference between donald chump and sadam insane.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

We likely could have won most of Soviet's nukes were ranged for Western Europe.

A nuclear exchange doesn't have first or second, only last.

But still, they died in 1991 and we have been living in Pax Americana since.

No oil here, kind American gentleman. New Zealand. New Zealand has all the oil. It's slightly closer too.

A crime should still be a crime when the police do it. Actually, let's make being police an aggravating factor to the crime.
