If you call one of the highest per-capita death rates on the planet "working pretty well".

How's that second wave for them?

Yep, cases significantly down and they haven't been seing the sort of rises that we've seen across most of Europe.

The death rate would be nowhere near as high were it not for a few issues in the nursing home system in a few of the larger cities.

More seriously, we need to be taking cues from the various African nations on how to handle this. Because they seem to be doing pretty damn well and it's pissing all the conservative talking heads off big time.

Not according to what the government is saying. They are planning additional measures.

And many local lockdowns have been happening in recent weeks in the UK, and the trend is spreading quite rapidly.

UK faces 50,000 Covid cases a day by mid-October if current infection rate not halted, warns top government scientist Sir Patrick Vallance

Whitty: Covid will be a 'six-month problem' which we all need to deal with

"The seasons are against us," says Prof Whitty. "We are now going into the seasons... that benefit respiratory viruses."

It's very likely Covid will benefit from autumn and winter, he says.

He says it will be a "six-month problem that we will have to deal with collectively".

"This period of the next six months needs to be taken seriously," he says.

Well I should have specified a further increase, it is not really flu season yet. And I know your government is considering lockdowns again, but many other countries are not. Many others think they can manage with other measures, short of lock downs. The question becomes why can other places do it without further lockdowns but the UK cannot.

The economy is the production, exchange and distribution of goods and services. If goods and services are not being produced, exchanged and distributed because people are locked down, there will be a shortage of goods and services, and this is not good. The economy is the only thing between living in least developed poverty and living the comfortable life you are used to.

I do not understand why this is so hard to understand. Yes you need to take measures to reduce the spread, but to neglect the economy entirely will possibly cause more harm to more people than the virus.

There is a middle ground here, as much as the hyper-polarized society often seems to find that unthinkable.

It is what the dodgy Russian Conservative Party donor paid for a night out with Theresa. They also paid £150,000 to play tennis with Cameron and Johnson.

I think pubs needing to shut at 10pm is going to make a negligible to no difference. It looks more like window dressing to me, a ploy to make it look like they are doing something when actually it is doing very little.

There's one thing I think it might stop: it may curtail the ability of symptomless people to go on pub crawls, and spreading the bug to goodness knows how many venues.

Of course, I don't think that is a majority of drinkers. But I do think it might limit those taking the least precautions, which may include some of those that I've seen on the local news (still trying to behave like they did before COVID).

But, generally, I do agree that the government are doing very little, and trying to seem like they're taking significant steps.

I had a pub crawl planned.

I'm interested to see why the government felt the need to put out the pub curfew announcement early ahead of tonight's announcement.

Presumably so that pubs get more than 2 hours notice of when they're closing tonight.

Everyone should work from home if they can, says Gove. General message seems to be that we're not going into a national lockdown again, but we are going to see some increased restrictions.

New measures have been outlined in the Commons:
- All hospitality to close at 22:00
- Weddings must have 15 people present or fewer.
- Face masks will be compulsory for retail staff.
- Fines for rule breaking will increase.
- People should work from home if possible.

It won't really change much. As I said earlier: window dressing. A quick critique point by point:

  • Earlier closing time will make a negligible difference in my opinion.
  • Big weddings have not been a primary catalyst for this rise, it's tertiary at best.
  • The vast majority of retail staff I have seen, 95%+, use face masks anyway, so preaching to the choir.
  • The fines won't likely be a deterrent because even the fines we have at the moment are not being enforced nearly enough.
  • Working from home seems to still be quite popular, and people who can work from home already are, so telling them to do it won't make much difference.
