I mean to handle the "rare in the profession" bit, it's probably because people don't really go for punch-down humour any more. Thank god.

Because punching-up is always absolutely okay and has no bad implications ever? Call me the humour police, but punching is generally frowned upon.

So we shouldn't be allowed to make jokes about those holding the power in society?

The indications weeks ago was that we'd reached the limit of easing that could be achieved without a vaccine. Why there was even a push to carry on with it is nonsensical.

Yeah it was pretty obvious they were making a bad decision, but they pressed ahead with it, then had to u turn again. Speaks of how shambolic this government is.

We should be allowed to make jokes about everyone or no-one. Personally I prefer the latter. The BBC should introduce a fleet of humour-detecting vans with tank guns.

It's a pity there's not a British ideological political counterpart to Tony Abbot, leading the Conservative Party.
He is of course referring to the dementia patients who are in the final stages of the disease, have become so mentally and physically infirm they're completely dependent on others and are no longer capable of quality of life. Covid is speeding up a process which is horribly protracted by medical intervention, and I know because I've seen it happen.

I remember a time where Britain could choose between Tory or Tony.

British manufacturing of politicians has been in terminal decline since 1990

Well because of leaving the EU the UK can no longer import the equipment needed to keep them alive.

"Punching" has a slightly separate meaning in comedy and has done for a long time now. I suspect you're thinking more of that time Richard Spencer ate a knuckle sandwich.

I'm aware of what punching refers to in comedy. Still, I find it distasteful to disparage an identity or group, regardless of whether they're an "acceptable target".

I read this as "Tony or Tony" and then as "Tory or Tory".

So its distasteful to satirise the government?

For some the choice between New Labour and Tory might as well have been Tory or Tory :p

Don't be dense. Satirising the government is different from disparaging a whole demographic. That's what i'm talking about.

Letting poor people mock the rich is how you avoid the poor taking more direct measures. Take your pick.

Yup. People tend to get rather antsy when they have no outlet to express dissatisfaction, even a cultural outlet.

Seems to me the humour is already getting people antsy. How incendiary before it's a straight up call to war in joke form?

It's far better to have open discussions about it in the arts as it has a filtering effect to make it more palatable to people, it sublimates it and makes it far less incendiary; as if a truth is left unexpressed then it turns toxic.

Fair enough. That said, if a joke has the potential to radicalize, i'd tread lightly.
