For the poll, a third option should be added.

"Yes, depending on who is supplying the chip."
Yugoslavia's back baby...

How the hell did this happen?
Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.
Is it a reunited Yugoslavia in the 21st century? Is a rebel colony world in the far future? Is it a race of cyborg neo-life at war with any assimilating organisms they come across in the far far future? Who knows, who cares?

The post below yours shows why we have to allow capitalists to build these devices. And with regulation, try to keep control of them in the public domain (with open source software).

If we don't, the capitalists will sell it to the military instead. We must not allow this to become the new Nuclear, with civilian applications always tainted by the military origins.

You can't ban technology. You can only opt out, so please don't opt all the people out of it, until we've talked it over and held a vote!

Remember when Elon Musk was going to turn the Earth's crust into a honeycomb of hyperloops, changing personal transportation forever? Remember when he was going to fix Flint's water? Remember when he was bragging about how his cybertruck was bullet resistant but then smashed the windows easily? I would sooner trust my health to someone in the streets claiming to be a wizard than this overhyped buffoon who has fallen for his own con.

They're probably a technophobe.
Either that or they're a big fan of the Terminator franchise.

Transhumanism is one of the greatest threats to Mankind. It's a misuse of reason by Man seeking to advance his autonomy by striving to place the laws of nature within it.

Transhumanism is fine, it's rich idiots thinking they're comic book geniuses that's the problem.

It's a Star Wars reference. The Clones had biochips in their brains.

The electric cars seem to be pretty good. Of course you never know with cars: the ones that break down when they get a few years old can seem fine at first.

The boosters seem pretty good. You have to admire landing a rocket on its tail. On a barge, at sea. But you never know with rockets either, they seem good until one blows up.

There's The Boring Company, progressing with purpose though of course quite slowly. They have a dozen contracts.

So yeah. Some of his proposals went no-where. But others have been quite successful. Elon Musk is my kind of capitalist: taking risks, innovating, investing in new industries. Maybe the hyperloop will happen after all: I remember the main problem was unrealistic costing (Musk pretty much assumed all the real estate would be donated) so when he's made some more money maybe it will happen.

He is a bit of a buffoon. Shouldn't use Twitter at all. But I think what you deny about him is actually what you don't like about him: he's successful.

Fiction is useful for exploring the downsides of potential new technologies, but it would be silly to wholly write off a field of technological study just because once someone told a story where they had that technology and it was bad.

Neuroscientists generally agreed that Neuralink's aims are perfectly legit; what's unrealistic is their superambitious schedule. At least on the curing neurological problems part. Also unlike Hyperloop, which is basically train but futuristic, a Neuralink breakthrough will open the gates to a completely new technological can of worms, where there will a lot of competition.

I doubt there are any advances that don't come with their own problems, We just need to rationally balance the downsides against the advantages.

You may well be right. That's why it should only ever be optional. If you want to stay the way evolution (or God) made you, you're welcome.

It's a misuse of reason by Man seeking to advance his autonomy by striving to place the laws of nature within it.

The only laws of nature are the physical constraints we have not found a way around yet. Our animal nature puts no constraints on what "we" can become, if we can give up the conceit that we're perfect the way we are.

The hardest constraint we know of is the Speed of Light and we're chipping away at that. Conservation of Mass/Energy is pretty tough, but some day, maybe. Wouldn't it be great to be able to make stuff out of nothing?

We could make a whole new planet for the Normies. We Transcendents might have to come over and weed it a bit, to keep you all from wiping yourselves out. :p

My point is that this Iron Man wannabe has a well-established history of believing himself to be on the verge of changing the world with his ideas for new technological marvels, but it turns out that his half-baked ideas aren't as simple as he imagined and then the project fizzles out until he half-bakes a new idea. In a few months he'll have "invented" something else and we can only hope that no one is actually rich and desperate enough to get themselves killed in the meantime.

Science fiction has been phenomenal at predicting the future and been warning us about the dangers of certain technologies for years yet scientists refuse to heed such warnings
