Louisiana to be struck by its strongest hurricane on record

Hurricane Laura is poised to be the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in Louisiana with winds of 150 mph with the potential to be category five at landfall. A twenty foot storm surge is expected on the coast and possibly up to 10 feet or higher in Lake Charles. The storm surge could reach up to 30 miles inland. Hurricane force winds are expected as far north as Shreveport and Little Rock.

Some areas could be uninhabitable for months. I pray for all the people on the coast and everyone got out that could. A storm surge of 20 feet is unsurvivable.

Thoughts on this historic event?

I evacuated the other day from Lake Charles. Im with my parents just north of Baton Rouge. Here's hoping I have a place to go back to.

It seems like Batan Rouge will also be affected by the hurricane, but here's to hoping the damage in populated areas remains as minimal as possible given the circumstances.

It's a big storm, winds will be felt as far as Mobile. The whole state is going to get some but there's no evacuation order in place for BR and we stand to only get around 5 inches of rain off it. Basically Im as safe as I can be while still remaining in the state.

Wonder if we'll see an increase in hurricane activity after this, similar to what we saw in 2005 with a record four Category 5 storms. I would hope that isn't the case, but it's been a while since the Atlantic has had a real active season so it's definitely possible.

It's common for tropical storm and low category hurricanes to strengthen once they get over the Gulf of Mexico, such as Katrina did.
