But, and this is important to the actual legal part of this, he was complying with Wisconsin's duty to retreat from violent confrontation to the literal best of his ability, while his attacker was pursuing him and attempting to prevent him from retreating from said violent confrontation in direct violation of Wisconsin law.

I haven't heard that particular claim, but I've never heard any of the dozen or so versions of the story which don't indicate he showed up in the company of adults, whom he was later separated from.
This is still dumb, but it's not the "show up alone and opencarrying to counterprotest a riot" level dumb. Moreover, it's the kind of dumb we would expect an otherwise reasonable seventeen year old to do- going along with what the adults around you are doing is, well, kind of what teenagers are supposed to do.
