Solitary confinement longer than a week or so is classed as a form of psychological torture; so, again, no.

He’ll be isolated enough in prison. He’s going to need to be if he wants to stay alive, since I believe many sharing prison with him will want him dead.

He will likely be in protective custody where he will only be able to interact with a small handful of people, likely a dozen. It isn't solitary confinement as such, but it is minimising the number of people around him to minimise the risk that someone might try to off him.

No doubt prison life will make him suffer in more ways than one. Which is what I’m gathering from what most people want.

I do hope he doesn't get to radicalize anyone during his time though.

I'm not so sure. Life imprisonment and only ever being allowed to watch Barney reruns sounds like a worthy punishment.

I don't think he will get much, if any, contact with other prisoners.

A similar mass murderer of his level of dangerousness, Anders Behring Breivik, doesn't interact with any other prisoners, and his visitors are meticulously screened. Day-to-day he only interacts with guards and health care workers. His letters are also screened for any hate material. I think we can expect that kind of imprisonment in this case as well.

The link isn't talking about method, it's the other costs that are higher.

I think now's a great time to test out the rehabilitation theory.

They are only high due to bloated government not because the process is inherently expensive

You were responding to someone who posted a link, and your post didn't really address the content of said link.

And I don't see NZ shooting prisoners any time soon, so your comment is ultimately irrelevant anyway.

I'm just really happy that no one has come onto this thread with the intent to defend this man.
Yugoslavia's back baby...

How the hell did this happen?
Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.
Is it a reunited Yugoslavia in the 21st century? Is a rebel colony world in the far future? Is it a race of cyborg neo-life at war with any assimilating organisms they come across in the far far future? Who knows, who cares?
New Yugoslavia just is.

Guys, I think it's best to leave the trial to the court in NZ. They are clearly dealing with the issue professionaly and the verdict seems credible.

After crimes and terrorist acts have been committed, people usually feel a lot of emotions and it is important not to become an angry mob that suggests outright barbaric punishments. That's what differentiates us from terrorists - we are civilised and they are not.

Nope.

Although reading it a bit now, the death penalty trials tend to cost more and that's what lends to the bulk of the expense, right?
I imagine that is the case because generally, you need to take more effort to prove that the case is worth the death penalty. At least, in my layman's mind.

I'm not sure it would apply to this particular case, considering he broadcast his killing on the internet as he was doing it.
