A lot of the "riots" were started by police showing up and brutally trying to disperse peaceful protests.

That's the problem in America, in a lot of places you have to get a permit to protest. So police will show up and declare the protest unlawful assembly and if you don't leave, they'll engage in violence to force you to disperse. Riots, ignoring the looting and stuff that happens as people - usually outsiders - take advantage of the chaos, are when people defend themselves from the police attacking them.

The problem, of course, with having to obtain a permit to protest is that the 1st amendment guarantees the right to protest. If somebody wants to protest the government, specifically the law enforcement arm of the government in these cases, they should not have to get a permit to protest and that barrier is a violation of their 1st Amendment rights. Furthermore, any enforcement of that barrier is a violation of their 1st Amendment rights.

My advice? The left needs to arm up as much as the right arms up. You didn't see police violently dispersing anti-mask protesters, and I'd bet money its because a lot of them were visibly armed.
