You have to get popular votes to get electoral votes. Oh, and 1787, not 1776.

But this isn't binding in several cases. It depends on the rules against faithless electors in the States but technically he could be correct, since otherwise there's nothing binding electors to vote a certain way.

the chances of that occurring are remote. It would be a constitutional crisis the likes of which this country has never seen.

33 states have laws punishing faithless electors, though half of those laws have no enforcement mechanisms. No presidential election has ever been decided by faithless electors.

And those electors can vote however they want - with the exception of 14 states.
Not to mention how shit the electoral college system is in regards to somebody being able to win without winning the popular vote - which really nails in the fact that our votes don't matter.

Established in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution, the Electoral College is the formal body which elects the President and Vice President of the United States. Each state has as many "electors" in the Electoral College as it has Representatives and Senators in the United States Congress, and the District of Columbia has three electors. When voters go to the polls in a Presidential election, they actually are voting for the slate of electors vowing to cast their ballots for that ticket in the Electoral College.
The constitution was created in 1776.
