My prediction is Biden wins relatively narrowly, democrats take back control of the senate narrowly, and there's at least one electoral college upset.

It sure would be nice to see a landslide repudiation of Trumpism.

The ricin package was before that, though. Hence "earlier this week".

Collins put out a statement saying that she does not support doing a floor vote for the appointment, and that whoever wins the election should be able to fill in the spot.

So that's 51 - 49 right now - depending on when the appointment is held, could be 50 - 50 with Mark Kelly getting sworn in early.

1. Don’t turn Trump into a martyr. Let cholesterol do its job.
2. Don’t get your murder plots from Breaking Bad. No ones plans worked out in Breaking Bad.
3. Don’t choose your dumbass assassination plot...actually full stop. Don’t choose your dumbass assassination plot. But also not one that has never worked AND just endangers some schlub whose job it is to prevent your dumbass assassination plot.
4. Don’t choose a guaranteed to fail assassination plot on someone who already lives off an already exaggerated persecution complex.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Collins putting out a statement makes me think the caucus is firmly behind the President here.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if McConnell is allowing Collins to do this because he has enough votes. Of course, things can change - I'm sure McConnell didn't plan for Romney to vote for one of the articles of impeachment, for example. Same with McCain and the ACA repeal.

First candidate to 270 electoral college votes wins. Hence, you could get zero votes from the popular vote and still win the election.

If you live in a safe state sure, your local election still matters.

I would have thought that 2016 disproved this line of thinking. Trump won by razor thin margins in a number of swing states.

The electoral college has been around since 1776, but the way it was used in elections since then has changed a few times.

Um... yes. It's very unlikely but there's always an acute sliver of a chance that it will happen in an election.
