Saddam Hussein styled himself as the Stalin of the middle east. The intervention wasn't the worst thing, but it could have worked if America hadn't up and said "Whoop-de-doo we won" in '06 without cleaning up their mess. That left the power gap. That left instability. That let the IS come to power.
