I'm pretty certain this was a terror attack. Two blasts, in a country in turmoil? Wouldn't surprise me.

Agreed. We need to find some solution to their hyperinflation crisis, and fast, and we need to try to get Hezbollah out of the country. I mean this happened right before the verdict of a UN trial on Hezbollah members, and Hezbollah is very active in Lebanon (they attacked Israel just a few weeks ago), so I am almost positive that Hezbollah is responsible. And unfortunately since Hezbollah is so entrenched in the Lebanese government, you can't fight them without fighting all of Lebanon; it's like trying to attack the Republicans without fighting the whole US.

This is only serving to demoralise the Lebanese populace, we could expect to see even more turmoil in the region. I do hope that the city and its residents follow after the nickname of the city as the Phoenix city, rising from the ashes of each and every disaster stronger than ever.

I’m also worried for possible spread of COVID between patients and victims. Let’s just hope for the best.

I thought Beirut got nuked when I first saw the footage on Instagram. The blast was huge.

To be frank, I’m doubting whether or not the explosions were caused by fireworks or fertiliser. If this was a fireworks explosion, you’d probably see fireworks bursting every now and again. If this was fertiliser, I don’t think it would be powerful enough to generate a shockwave felt in Cyprus.

I am no means an expert on either material, I am simply making hypotheses from what I have observed in the past. I apologise if I am wrong.

The cause of the explosion is still not known, but some reports suggest it may have been an accident. Lebanon's National News Agency reported a fire breaking out at what it called an explosives depot at the port before the explosion.

Do we have any confirmed deaths from the explosions or is it just injuries for now?

In the longer videos you can see lots of small bright explosions before the main one. It's plausible that the initial fireworks set off a more concentrated cache. If you wanted to get into conspiracies then said cache could be some Hezbollah ammo dump.

No confirmed, but let us be realistic - on one of the videos you see an entire appartment building being blasted to shreds. It probably was not empty.

A huge explosion, in the capital and biggest city, of a developing country that has terrorist problems, would have to be TWO firework factories, attacking a former prime ministers house, an apartment building, and several cars. Did not look like fireworks at all to me in the video.

Fireworks indeed.

If you were to manufacture fireworks, you’d think they’d be a bit more on the outskirts of a city, but this happened in a port. If it was a storage facility, the workers should definitely have placed more care in separating and storing the fertiliser or fireworks or whatever combustible compound that resulted in the explosion.

If you observe closely, you can see that the buildings close to the port looked like they were vaporised. Very concerned for what the full aftermath would look like.

That is sad to hear must've been scary for the people in the apartments to see a cloud of smoke only before getting knocked down by the shockwave.

Indeed, there's reports that the blast was heard as far away as Cyprus (234km).

It was a PORT nowhere near a fireworks factory and injured some important people including the STINKIN FORMER PM and sent cars flying, attacked a full apartment building... Looks a lot like ISIS if you ask me and no im not paranoid just using common sense to deduce that it was 100% terrorists.

The explosion was near the Capitol building and killed a party leader. I would be VERY surprised if it wasn't terrorism.

And people are back to speculating the incident how about we hold off on any conspiracy theories until government officials finish their investigation.

It would be futile to expect anything else. I saw one hot take that it was "atomic" simply because of the blast cloud, as if that effect is unique to nuclear bombs (it's not).

If it was a nuke I'm pretty sure the entire city would be vaporized.

That's the best compilation of explosion footage I can find, as well as some of the aftermath. I highly doubt this was fireworks. If it was it would have looked alot more colorful and probably would have had multipule explosions all over the place. Honestly this looks like it could have been a small nuclear bomb or something similar. I hope they find out exactly who did this.

The explosion was very clearly non-nuclear. There was no residual fallout or radiation associated with the explosion, so it can't be a nuclear bomb of any sort. Non-nuclear explosives are able to create mushroom clouds too, especially given how mushroom clouds are not unique to nukes, mkay?

Agreed, and probably Hezbollah at that, since four Hezbollah members are being tried in absentia at the ICC in The Hague n just a few days, so this is probably from Hezbollah to “protest” the trial.

Someone could have just built an Oklahoma City style bomb and set it off. The blast from that thing was huge.

Went down to the comments on Sky News coverage of the explosion and so far I seen two comments blaming Isreal for the explosion.

Man people sure like spreading conspiracy theories when government officials haven't finished investigating.

The way that the water in the air condenses and turns into a noticeable vapour similar to a nuclear blast shows it was at least several hundred tons of high explosive that went up.
