Large explosion in Beirut - hundreds reported injured

There has been a large explosion in Beirut ahead of a verdict in a trial by a UN tribunal on the death of its former PM, Rafik Hariri, in which four Hezbollah members are the suspects. The Health Minister of Lebanon has said that there are a large number of injuries and much damage. The port area of Beirut, where the explosion occurred, has been closed to allow fire and ambulance services to rush to the scene. Some reports say the explosion was preceded by, or caused by, a fire at a fireworks factory or warehouse.

It's really sad how Lebanon's ended up. The country is basically a failed state, people cant even buy food, and then one day two huge explosions destroy blocks of Beirut.

I'm pretty certain this was a terror attack. Two blasts, in a country in turmoil? Wouldn't surprise me.

I'm calling it a terrorist attack, it's the most likely outcome.

Sounds like there was a second explosion at the former residence of Saad Hariri. The news is starting to suggest this was indeed terror related.

It could be pretty easy to spark a fire at a fireworks factory, just pointing out. Now isn't the time for speculation.

There coincidentally was two blasts that both were fireworks accidents...

...oh and the one sent cars flying. Sure, I totally believe it was "fireworks." I believe that about as much as I believe Jeff Epstein killed himself.

Lebanon's state-run NNA news reports that a major fire broke out in a warehouse used for storing firecrackers, near Beirut's port, and strong explosions were heard shortly afterwards.

Wedeman said the cause of the blast was "still not clear -- if it was fireworks, as some news sources are saying -- they are some damn big fireworks."

More likely an industrial accident or a firework accident.

Well, that is possible. Fireworks destroyed a significant part of a city a few years back.

Fireworks destroying cities ? Sure. They are explosives.

To quote the article:

A total of 400 homes were destroyed and 1500 buildings damaged. The first explosion had a strength in the order of 800 kg TNT equivalence, while the strength of the final explosion was within the range of 4000–5000 kg TNT.[3] The biggest blast was felt up to 30 kilometres (19 mi) away

"Fireworks". They go boom.

Fireworks are bombs and munitions made to look pretty. If you have a warehouse or factory full of fireworks you have a massive bomb.

Just pointing out here that any discussion of a cause at this point - whether terrorist or otherwise - is mostly speculation.

Indeed. We'll have to wait and see what happened. Right now the facts are as follows. There were explosions. That's all we know.

Very much so; it's still developing, so all we can really do now is wait & see.

The explosion that was caught on camera was awesome. (I use the word in its original root meaning, not as a synonym for admiration.)

Agreed. We need to find some solution to their hyperinflation crisis, and fast, and we need to try to get Hezbollah out of the country. I mean this happened right before the verdict of a UN trial on Hezbollah members, and Hezbollah is very active in Lebanon (they attacked Israel just a few weeks ago), so I am almost positive that Hezbollah is responsible. And unfortunately since Hezbollah is so entrenched in the Lebanese government, you can't fight them without fighting all of Lebanon; it's like trying to attack the Republicans without fighting the whole US.

It was the footage with the building and the smoke and then there's a huge blast and the building basically gets blown to pieces, then the camera man turns to run and gets blown down.
