Is Free Speech good?

Postby Epluribus Unum » Mon Jul 20, 2020 11:16 am

With the constant changing of culture and ideas and the ever changing "New Words", is freedom of speech good? And is it necessary for a free people?

I wanted to make this a Poll, but have not the experience to do so, I would say from my point of view; Without free speech there can no exchange of ideas, no comprehensive talks on solutions. I know words make peoples emotions go hay wire, but aren't we as a people strong enough to ignore bombastic, offensive language? Furthermore what is to be gained by limiting words?

Is the end result of a selective word pool, and subject pool good for the growth of man? I do not think so, and who chooses the words?

Silence is violence but so is hate speech defined as I see fit.

Why is this even in debate? The fundamental and natural right to freely express yourself is necessary and we have and will continue to fight for this most basic right.

The Supreme Court has ruled there is no such thing as hate Speech as the mere nature of that would be in direct conflict with our First Amendment.

Hate speech is anything that I personally disagree with or get offended by, and I wish to impose this on other people.

Depends which school in my opinion. Even so, I wouldn't put it down as a legal matter - more just for individual schools to decide.

No, it's just unabashed authoritarianism.

Free speech is a legal policy.

Non-legal institutions can impose whatever restrictions they want, its still free speech.

Free speech only gets violated when people start getting legal penalties for their opinions.

For the most part. I've always been a bit confused if the term Free Speech involves all speech is or most of it is. I'm fine with most speech but criminal harassment can involve speech and that is not ok.
Dangine is a Socialist nation that has a lot of political freedom and civil rights.

I agree, but would only add Free Speech is not a legal Policy. It is a Founding Principle an Inalienable right as a Citizen of the United States!

What do you mean? Criminal Harassment in the terms of threatening is already against the law. We have Laws that cover everything already, All Speech needs be free, like it or not! People have the right to hate, be angry, or sad they way they see fit!

I mean it depends on context.

I guess it does have limits, such as death threats and direct verbal harrasment.
