Maybe I'm missing something, but it really seems like a bad idea to open things up just because case numbers are down and not because anything has actually been done to make the operation of those things safer.

Tell me how you'd make it safer?

For some it seems to be that the only thing they can accept now is to stay locked down forever because there will always be that fear of "Another Wave" of COVID hitting.

I mean there are some people who think humanity should just wear masks forever like some sort of dystopian novel.

It's not a view held by everyone but I'm pretty sure after this Germophobia has skyrocketed in much of the population.

If they were burning surgical masks, they may have made themselves sick with smoke from polypropylene.

"Cloth" other than cotton is some kind of plastic, and not good to inhale smoke from either.

They also had lots of masks, with some people wearing them every day to avoid flu.

It kind of annoys me that Trump's advice to wear whatever over your face if you can't get a surgical or N95 mask, has established some uncertified cloth thing bought in a shop as "good enough". He wasn't wrong, but what was lacking was some follow up to bridge the gap between a stylish but ineffective cloth mask, and a fugly (and disposable) but effective surgical mask. I've seen people wearing both at once, and good for them, but it seems an unnecessary burden on the breathing.

If we open things up when case numbers fall, what's to stop the case numbers from rising again? That's what's been happening in Ireland. We're on our third "lockdown" now. We opened things up for Christmas, loosened the restrictions on visiting other people, and in the New Year the case numbers shot up. There was a while there that the only thing keeping us under 10,000 new cases a day was the fact that we didn't have the capacity to properly confirm all the positive tests.

Might not be a bad idea for us to wear them more. We have, I believe, slashed flu deaths massively this year.

It's not a view held by everyone but I'm pretty sure after this Germophobia has skyrocketed in much of the population.

It's only anecdotal, but in my experience people are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and becoming a little more lax about things like mask wearing. But I wouldn't be surprised if there were an uptick in people being more conscious of the potential spread of germs in their ordinary activities.
