I think I am going to retire Old Blue, the surgical mask I have worn since the mask mandate was implemented last July with a proper burning on the grill.

Annoying, I could sleep on the arm last night, couldn't the night after the first shot. The headache kind of sucks, but I have worked through worse. Compared to how I was scared by coworkers with their reactions, I am pleased. I have been told the reaction can start till after 30 hours, but most reported the night or day after.

Well? The problem is the money. The type of research being done happens in labs with equipment and people where charity and good will/intentions won’t create. Even in the university labs; they get money from the profit minded people.

At this time people tend to be a little to selfish for altruistic cures.

Oxford were going to give the rights to their vaccine away for free, but Bill Gates threatened to pull the grants from his foundation if they didn't sell the rights exclusively. People want to be altruistic, but that would disrupt the market so it isn't being allowed.

Bill Gates needs to be locked in a computer lab. I don't understand why a guy who made money off of windows is acting like his opinion in other fields of science is really that important.

Bill Gates: "We gotta get covid under control by any means."

Oxford: "We could give the vaccine out for free."

Bill Gates; "No."

Always has been. It's like when celebrities say things like "oh no climate change" and then they're flying all over the place in a private jet polluting the earth. Bill Gates is a virtue signaler. I'm sure his desire to fight climate change would also dry up just like his desire to fight covid the moment it impacted his profits and lowered tbem by, idk, $100 a year.

As much as I dislike Bill, that is not really fair. Vaccine research and distribution are core issues for his foundation, he has given away 100's of millions dollars to the cause of vaccines. Whether you agree with him or not, he has bought and paid for a seat at the table.

I really hope to be able to eat out again soon. Numbers in my city are pretty good, just have to fall a bit more. If not now, summer would be an ideal time. I want to sit outside with a frozen strawberry margarita and a burger.

In other news, ever since Germany stopped letting people use cloth masks, I've been struggling to find a comfortable version of the FF2P or whatever its called. I bought a 4 pack of comfortable ones and went through them in a month, all the others I've tried since have been awful. The blue surgical masks are still allowed but they're flimsy as fuck, those stupid straps break so easy.

That is the one place I sort of agree with the anti maskers, outdoors and in sunlight the virus doesn't really spread. Sitting outside drinking that frozen margarita should be ok.

Numbers feel pretty far in my state during the summer. They were nothing like they were in spring of last year or winter this year.

In his context vaccine development will always be in the hands of big pharma, and discouraging them for doing the research is bad.

Calling out your view of the hypocrisy is absolutely fair. And pointing out Dr. salk gave away the polio vaccine and still managed to make a decent living at medical research is also fair.

It seems to protect everyone who gets it, but the most vulnerable (elderly, but also small children, immunocompromised etc) are not getting vaccinated as much as they should.

Surprisingly, the UK is better than any European country for flu vaccinations for over 65's. It's 72% but still it could be higher.

Australia has one of the worst uptakes in the world, perhaps because we tend to call any kind of cold "the flu" to get that day off work ... or for whatever reason, we don't take flu as seriously as we should.

Even I am a year behind on my jab. Covid made me forget I guess.

I'm not sure that economies could survive regular extended lockdowns while a massive vaccine roll-out of the scale we're seeing now is carried out.

From my understanding, it's mitigatory, not preventative. I don't think not wearing them will kill people, but, at the same time, I understand how insidious this bug can be.

And its suddenly being pervasive throughout society like it's normal, as well as seeing other people (especially kids) wearing them, is a severe anxiety trigger for me. Yay!

I feel like, even if the mandate is lifted where I live (which is doubtful for now), stores will still force you to wear one, so it won't do much. But I still want it to be lifted, because three-year-olds should not be forced to wear a mask if they don't have illnesses or immune disorders. You shouldn't have to wear one to go to school. Kids should be going to school, not slogging through class on a computer. But anyway, that's another rant.

as much as i would love for school to be back in session, it seems... unadvisable to have large numbers of people confined in a building for hours on end not wearing masks.

Covid might change peoples attitudes towards getting a vaccination, and I honestly hope that's the case. It certainly has for my formerly massively anti-vaxxer family; I was that kid who everyone was envious of because my parents didn't let the nasty nurse lady stab me. Now they've both got the covid vaccine and obviously after I started making my own decisions I have had them. Still never got the childhood jabs, though.
