Masks, specifically N95 (alternatively KN95 or FFP2) tier, are supposed mostly for closed rooms or closed environment to protect from aerosols and the likes.

Surgical masks will NOT protect you against aerosols. Still better than nothing though.

If you have worn the same mask for over six months (unless you washed it repeatedly at 60 degree celsius in washing machine by which time it would be useless or destroyed anyways or alternatively put it into the oven) then you should by all means burn it as it is more than likely than not become a health danger in itself due very long exposure to breath and moisture and should have long been discarded.

From my understanding, it's mitigatory, not preventative. I don't think not wearing them will kill people, but, at the same time, I understand how insidious this bug can be.

And its suddenly being pervasive throughout society like it's normal, as well as seeing other people (especially kids) wearing them, is a severe anxiety trigger for me. Yay!

I feel like, even if the mandate is lifted where I live (which is doubtful for now), stores will still force you to wear one, so it won't do much. But I still want it to be lifted, because three-year-olds should not be forced to wear a mask if they don't have illnesses or immune disorders. You shouldn't have to wear one to go to school. Kids should be going to school, not slogging through class on a computer. But anyway, that's another rant.
