“If your so desperate for a job go work in a hospital”

It’s amazing to me how he has the nerve to wonder why people hate him with comments like that.

pretty sure that people do not get to choose which vaccine they take.

This is completely unacceptable. No one should be forced to take a vaccine they don't want to take. No one should be arrested and charged with "wasting resources" for declining to take a certain type of vaccine, which is what the Malaysian government is planning to do to those of us with a conscience.

I'm not taking the Sinovac vaccine if I can help it. The data from the third phase clinical trial data remains incomplete and has been cynically obfuscated under Chinese political pressure to portray the vaccine in as positive a light as possible. Also, an efficacy of 50.5% is just too uncomfortably close to 49%, which is just below the minimum threshold required by both the WHO and the U.S. CDC. This has all the hallmarks of a manufacturer that has cut corners and rushed a product to approval before a gullible and vulnerable Third World populace whose mindset is America bad, China good.

If I do end up being one of the unfortunate ones to have the Sinovac vaccine forced onto me, I will consider getting a booster shot from a more reputable manufacturer such as Pfizer or J&J several months down the line and paying extra for it. New variants are emerging and spreading everywhere after all and we need to be prepared.

The Chinese government will not own my body or my life. I don't live in Hong Kong anymore so they can't tell me what to do anymore. Fuck the CCP.

I agree that the UK has done a shit job most of the time and Boris Johnson deserves a huge amount of criticism for his government's slow response times and indecisiveness, but on the bright side, it looks as if Boris Johnson has finally managed to get his shit together and completely turn things around in recent months with a strict, months-long national lockdown, an extremely gradual, months-long, planned easing of restrictions, and a hugely successful vaccination program (that doesn't use an inferior vaccine such as Sinovac or force people to use it).

The UK now has a lower per capita infection rate than Malaysia did at its peak in late January, and it's a new, more contagious variant that's being slowly contained. Compared to my country's current handling of the crisis, my confidence in Boris Johnson has been fully restored.

In some cases that is true. For example; small town usa with only a pharmacy. Other cases; a large city can have many. I know there are places for pfizer and moderna.

Don’t be obtuse.

Having your research “borrowed” is a bad thing.

If the people looking to create these vaccines aren’t making any money or getting rewarded......

Even if people were driven exclusively by the incentive to profit, the only people who are actually necessary to create vaccines and medicine are the scientists and chemists. So if we have to pay them a huge amount of money, fine, but cut out all the parasites who make money only because they're CEO's or shareholders.

It will never end.

[...]in the last month, data from a vaccine trial in South Africa showed not only that a rapidly-spreading coronavirus variant could dampen the effect of the vaccine, it could also evade natural immunity in people who had been previously infected

A new consensus is emerging among scientists, according to Reuters interviews with 18 specialists who closely track the pandemic or are working to curb its impact. Many described how the breakthrough late last year of two vaccines with around 95% efficacy against COVID-19 had initially sparked hope that the virus could be largely contained, similar to the way measles has been.

But, they say, data in recent weeks on new variants from South Africa and Brazil has undercut that optimism. They now believe that SARS-CoV-2 will not only remain with us as an endemic virus, continuing to circulate in communities, but will likely cause a significant burden of illness and death for years to come.

As a result, the scientists said, people could expect to continue to take measures such as routine mask-wearing and avoiding crowded places during COVID-19 surges, especially for people at high risk.

Murray said if the South African variant, or similar mutants, continue to spread rapidly, the number of COVID-19 cases resulting in hospitalization or death this coming winter could be four times higher than the flu. The rough estimate assumes a 65% effective vaccine given to half of a country’s population. In a worst-case scenario, that could represent as many as 200,000 U.S. deaths related to COVID-19 over the winter period, based on federal government estimates of annual flu fatalities.

His institute’s current forecast, which runs to June 1, assumes there will be an additional 62,000 U.S. deaths and 690,000 global deaths from COVID-19 by that point. The model includes assumptions about vaccination rates as well as the transmissibility of the South African and Brazilian variants.

For much of 2020, many scientists were surprised and reassured that the coronavirus had not changed significantly enough to become more transmissible, or deadly.

A major breakthrough came in November. Pfizer Inc and its German partner BioNTech SE as well as Moderna Inc said their vaccines were around 95% effective at preventing COVID-19 in clinical trials, an efficacy rate that is much higher than any flu shot.

At least a few of the scientists Reuters interviewed said even in the wake of those results, they hadn’t expected the vaccines to wipe out the virus. But many told Reuters that the data raised hope within the scientific community that it would be possible to virtually eliminate COVID-19, if only the world could be vaccinated quickly enough.

“We all felt quite optimistic before Christmas with those first vaccines,” said Azra Ghani, chair in infectious disease epidemiology at Imperial College London. “We didn’t necessarily expect such high-efficacy vaccines to be possible in that first generation.”

The optimism proved short-lived. In late December, the UK warned of a new, more transmissible variant that was quickly becoming the dominant form of the coronavirus in the country. Around the same time, researchers learned of the impact of the faster-spreading variants in South Africa and in Brazil.

Phil Dormitzer, a top vaccine scientist at Pfizer, told Reuters in November that the U.S. drugmaker’s vaccine success signaled the virus was “vulnerable to immunization” in what he called “a breakthrough for humanity.” By early January, he acknowledged the variants heralded “a new chapter” in which companies will have to constantly monitor for mutations that could dampen the effect of vaccines.

In late January, the impact on vaccines became even clearer. Novavax’s clinical trial data showed its vaccine was 89% effective in a UK trial, but just 50% effective at preventing COVID-19 in South Africa. That was followed a week later by data showing the AstraZeneca PLC vaccine offered only limited protection from mild disease against the South African variant.

New cases and deaths in Brazil are at an all-time high thanks to the new variant there

Astrazeneca isn't making any money on their vaccine until after the pandemic is over.

Hence the £3 per dose price point.

They get to set their own price.

The UK government covered the cost of their production facility in the UK and much of their research came from Oxford University. In return they don't get to make a profit during the pandemic.
