What is interesting is the stay at home orders show how many people are truly pathetic.

I build a deck on my front yard. Somebody turned it into the city. The inspectors came out and said the work was great; however.....

They also said the complaints have sky rocketed. His workload has sextupled and most of it is BS.

Puzzled me for a while too. "Though it was such a massive deal it's a whole city" but that still makes some sense.

JFC there are NSG posters on here that lost their family members, their friends, and their relatives to Covid. Your cold-hearted post makes me weep for humanity.

And there are nsg posters who have lost friends and family members to foreign wars, but the same few people still beat the drum for another one regularly. The truth is that someone being around who's 'lost someone' to a certain political issue doesn't make it any less of a political issue. It just means that they probably shouldn't read discussion on it if it upsets them so much.

Yeah I'm not going to take advice from a fellow who was fine with old people dying for the economy. Besides, what I addressed was not on a political aspect, but on a moral aspect. Vetalia was fine with massive Covid deaths (from doing nothing) so long as humanity continues to survive, which comes off as morally bankrupt if you think about it.

In the context it seems pretty clear Rojava is talking about having a swab shoved up his nose.

Maybe if you hadn't misread it as "infecting other people with covid is rape" you wouldn't have got angry and got red ink on you? Rojava often uses coarse phrases, so your own safety might be best served by putting the fellow on Ignore.

Yeah nose raped meant I got tested for covid. It wasn't fun, it was very uncomfortable and considering that tests aren't 100% accurate I'm still concerned, and a close friend of mine whose sister has a kidney disease and is very vulnerable to covid almost certainly has the disease since he hung out with patient 0 for 5 hours in his room and at one point hugged them while they cried about their dad dying.

This is not at all true and signals an ignorance of the ever changing strains we keep finding and the very real concerns doctors and virologists have that they can potentially change enough to largely negate vaccine effectiveness and start the whole thing over again. Even if things continue at the current pace we likely won't "be back to normal" until 2022.

If it takes years for poor countries to be vaccinated then we're definitely going to end up with vaccine resistant strains and we'll never get out of this pandemic.

Or might be the other way around the virus doesn't need to mutate to spread. Now with the vaccinated population it does.

Virii are funny things that way, humans always think we know what they are going to do, we don't.

But doesn’t this also lend to a possible likelihood of it eventually becoming less deadly over time similar to other coronaviruses?

The concealment, drug resistance, infectivity and lethality of the newly discovered viruses are increasing in South Africa and the UK.The mortality rate of COVID is very low, and there is no reason to be lower. There is reason to suspect that there have been many more frightening variants, but they have not been found.

Over the last 10 months, we have analyzed over five thousand SARS-CoV-2 genomes isolated from Indian patients of COVID-19 to build a phylogeny with 6888 mutation events (Singh et al. 2020).
Errrr.....Just 5000 samples...can find 6888 mutation events?!

There's evolutionary pressure for a virus to not kill its hosts, because dead people are no use as hosts and don't spread the virus to new hosts. But that's just pressure, not an absolute guarantee. And covid 19 has killed about 2.5 million people as is. A new strain could be less deadly and still add another million to that number.

If a Danish study that is still in pre-peer review status is correct in its assumptions regarding the so-called flu pandemic of 1889-1890 this will become a new cold virus like its MRCA over time.

Let's all take a breath and remind ourselves that no matter what ultimately happens this isn't exactly the Black Death 2.0, though.

Minor technicality: the coronavirus that potentially caused the 1889-90 pandemic (OC43) is not an ancestor of SARS-CoV-2, let alone the most recent common ancestor (the most recent common ancestor of extant SARS-CoV-2 strains is variant 19A, from late 2019). The most recent common ancestor of OC43 and SARS-CoV-2 is old. SARS-CoV-2 is in subgenus sarbecovirus (B lineage), while OC43 is an embecovirus (A lineage), so the MRCA is likely pretty close to the age of the overall betacoronavirus MRCA, which seems to be some thousands of years ago.

Good news: Malaysia has officially authorized the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Bad news: Malaysia has officially authorized the Sinovac vaccine.

Even the Philippines is allowing people to choose which brand of vaccine to be inoculated with. Even if West Malaysia succumbs, I hope the Sarawak state government is able to arrive at a separate decision and either refuse Sinovac and CanSino or let the people choose. #MyBodyMyChoice

Still no word from the government on J&J. I hope we don't pass up an amazing opportunity.
