Is your governor Andrew Cuomo, by any chance? Because he had a testy exchange with reporters recently. Wait, aren't you Canadian? You have premiers, not governors, right? (Except the Governor-General, obviously.)

Meanwhile, the Governor of Jakarta has tested positive for coronavirus

Maybe the gene pool needs to be cleansed. I partway to saying we should just refuse medical services to anyone who doesn’t follow basic guidelines such as a wearing a mask or social distancing.

Be a dumbass, fine, but reap what you sow.

Thanks to the recent shutdown, my family bikeshop has seen a significant drop in customers. I think it's annoying and it's leaving me kinda cash strapped. Did you know I could only go out for dinner one night this week as opposed to two? I think we should all be able to agree that the solution is to reopen. I'm sure people are smart enough to follow basic safety protocol and exercise caution if we were to do this and nothing bad would happen.

Idk if anyone has shared this yet. CDC to decide today who gets the first vaccine doses

Finally. I personally say that healthcare workers on the front lines should be the first to get it. They’re getting exposed every single day. Following them, I think nursing homes and other long term care facilities should be next, since they’ve been major hotspots for spread.

Crosspost from UKPol as it is highly relevant here too:

I say Donald Trump should get it first.

Not just because I want to see him cry like a baby. Though I do. But it would set a great example to his followers that getting vaccinated is what good freedom-loving Trump-fearing folks all do. It was halve the vaccine-refusing population right away.

But Trump has had the virus, you say? I'm not so sure he has, but anyway. The go-to reason of vaccine refusers will be "I already had the virus". And then they'd stand on their medical privacy to refuse the vaccine forever. Trump getting the shot, on camera, would stop that dead.

I have no problem with that. There should however be a website where you can type in personal details (or fully identify yourself if you choose) and it tells you where you are on the waiting list. It would help people plan their own futures, which I know sounds a bit silly and idealistic ... but we all do plan our own futures at least in a vague way.

In the US it goes the other way. Prosecutors wouldn't touch it, because beating up a small business doesn't look good.

Rest assured that I take no offence - you had absolutely no way of knowing - but this is, alas, precisely why I recently lost my job in Egypt.

Because of my vulnerability, I had to shield in my apartment in Cairo. But shielding at home is professionally complicated if your job requires direct access to artefacts.

While my project director gave me permission to work from home following formal advice from my UK medical specialists, our client was less sympathetic. In Europe, North America, or Australasia, I would have been protected by disability legislation. In a project in Egypt run by the Egyptian military, no such protection applies. So my contract was terminated with one month's notice because I had to work from home due to my vulnerability to COVID.

It's not the end of the world. I was paid generously enough that we have a cushion, and I'm currently negotiating with three separate potential partners over projects in KSA, Paraguay, and Glasgow for 2021; the KSA project looks particularly promising, though nothing's definite yet. But it does mean that the economic impact of the pandemic did come into rather sharp focus.

It's going to take several months at least before even just the most vulnerable are vaccinated, so in terms of sufficient numbers of other people being vaccinated before we see some return to normality will probably take a year at least.

I think he is being overly optimistic given the numbers setting up to resist vaccination.

That’s still good news in my eyes. For a while I thought the pandemic was gonna last forever. I can’t wait until I don’t have to wear a mask anymore because I’m sick of my glasses fogging up all the time.
