Usually, they don't. The Olympics is just a hole to sink massive amounts of money in and cities take years to recover and pull themselves out of debt afterwards. Thousands of people get displaced from homes for stadiums that will never be used again (see: Sochi, Russia, and Rio, Brazil as most recent examples)

I've been to the Montreal Facilities too and they seem like they mostly sit there, rotting.

Most facilities do. Nothing's as big as the Olympics, and nobody wants to use a stadium that can fit 80,000 fans for an event that's only going to pull in 5,000 or 10,000 fans. Empty seats don't look good.

what other than gas stations, food stores and pharmacies are essential? technically you could have only that in a town and people would survive just fine as would the world as a whole. And we don't technically need theatre, music, film or sports either.

Do any of those things you listed forcibly displace millions of people from their homes to make way for massive fuck off stadiums and arenas that will never (or rarely) get used again while also bankrupting the host city for years afterward and leaving cities in worse conditions than what they found them in?

We're not advocating for a boring world, we're advocating for a world where massively glorified pissing contests don't harm the local population every four years.

Tokyo 2020 is no different, if COVID remains a threat next year they need to do as the IOC has said they will: Cancel.

I don't know why you're trying to convince us - people who are presumably fans of entertainment - that entertainment needs to be banned. I don't like this idea of yours Lumen.

I didn't say that at all. I was merely pointing out that this notion of what's essential and what is not is absurd. All jobs are essential to someone.

It wouldn't have to be boring. Go out on a hike with friends or watch movies on Netflix

Well, you're right that the idea of the essential worker is absurd. But that's not our doing, it's the corporation's doing. The "essential worker" image was invented so that, instead of hazard pay or wage increases or other incentives for employees of "essential businesses," the companies could get away with glorifying us as heroes, which is free and costs them nothing to do.

It's utter bullshit.

When we mean essential we mean what is needed for people and society to continue to function. While sports, movies, music etc are important, if they did not exist society would still be okay and functioning.

Hollywood hasn't run out of new things to produce and they've been at it for a much longer time. Why would Netflix, which is much younger, run out of ideas anytime soon?

It’s a valid judgement. When the games were started; they were supposed to be for everybody.

Now, it’s a wealthy mans venue. Paid for by the common people. Few of the locals can afford seats at events. Opening and closing seats go for thousands.

I wonder what sorts of precautions will be taken if they do push ahead with the Olympics. I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere, but I don't typically check Japanese news.

Hopefully yes. Manufacturing enough doses and distributing them on a global scale will likely take years, though. I suppose you could make sure that everyone going to the Olympics has immunity (either natural immunity or from the vaccine)

Many companies are already mass producing so it doesn't take years.

If the situation next Summer is the same as it is now? Cancellation, according to the IOC. There's no way to safely bring 5-7 million people from around the world to one city, no matter what measures you take.
