Gerrymandering is the primary reason. Why shouldn’t the person with the most votes win?

Even so, if the Democrats gain control of everything in Texas, it would be just as hard for the repubs to gain everything back, amma right?

Under the system proposed yes it would. Which is why we need to have something other than FPTP as people want to vote for other parties

Not nessacerily. The primary reason they are proposing this is so they can win without getting the most votes statewide. They see the trends in the most populous counties and want a way to guarantee they will stay in power

Yes, I fully understand, but since dems are beginning to have higher amounts in Texas, if the Dems take control, it would be hard for Repubs to take it back as well!

It’s still going to be very difficult to get a majority in both chambers of the legislature. The state senate especially.

Do you truly thinks it’s fair for a candidate for statewide office to win via such a system where they didn’t get the most votes?

Amazing, but it's just making it more difficult for both parties.

I'm not a strong believer in democracy anyway, but that's not the point of this thread.

Why should it be easy?! We don't want the wrong people.

And if you want a direct answer, then the answer to your below Q would be yes.

Don’t want the wrong people? What is that supposed to mean? If you get the most votes you should win. End of story. Period. Goodbye. The end.

How would it be fair and democratic?

1. Your opinion. You could have people that are horrible running, experienced people need to vote them in.
2. If it's a democracy, it would eventually lead to the people. Who votes the people who vote him in? Who votes for the people who vote for people who vote for people who vote him/her in? Eventually it will lead to the people.

If that’s who the people want then so be it. There shouldn’t be a system in place to overturn the will of the people.

Do you not understand how this is a way to rig the election so republicans can’t lose?

I think a state vote should be held to determine if the constitution needs to be changed that way. In any case, all the districts should get one representative to the election, regardless of population.

Yes there should be a referendum. It’s unlikely it would pass though

Or how about the person with the most votes wins? Amazing concept I know

this is why large states and countries are bad. Texas should exercise its right to split itself up instead.

Also electoral colleges don't overturn votes based on merit of the politician.

It's only really making it more difficult for the Democrats, since the Republicans are the ones with the most control right now, and an electoral college would make it harder for Democrats to take a majority.

Sure, if the Democrats became the majority, it would then be more difficult for Republicans to take it back, but that's an "if" that I'm pretty sure isn't the case right now.

1. If it keeps on leading through and through the government, it can be a filter for sorruption.
2. If that's the case, it's flawed. After all, again, if Dems take control, it would be just as hard for repubs to take control.

Not if republicans have their way. They will do everything they can to ensure they win even if it means getting less votes

The system being proposed would make it very difficult if not impossible for a democrat to win statewide office. They are angry that they won’t be able to count on small rural counties to win statewide elections for much longer
