I am now more worried about the girl who brought charges against him. The mayor had a cult following and Koreans are pretty viscous on the internet.

One thing I newer understood is why people feel threatened if someone assaults them on the internet when they can easily avoid it by doing the bare minimum of due diligence and NOT revealing their personal information on the web. Like, you don't even need to use a VPN as I do. Just don't have your name and face plastered on facebook and the like and you'll be safe.

Dog poop girl had to drop out of university and leave the country. And she was lucky her family had money to do that.

Who now? Now I got to know but am afraid to google it for fear of finding videos of girls, dogs and feces. So like could you elaborate?

You vastly under estimate the power of a Korean flesh search. If someone takes a picture of you and tags your name, even if you do not have a facebook people will use that to get your name then cross reference it with public database.

I am actually somewhat impressed. Than again I am of the opinion that the police should just deploy an app via which anyone can easily send in photos of violators for a cash prize under the tag "report your neighbor".

I think in this case Koreans were convinced american beef imports were full of mad cow disease and Americans were sending the stuff most at risk to them.

To bring the discussion back on topic, I point you to the 2009 suicide of former president Roh in comparison.

Now, disclaimer, I’m speculating from here on out:

I think centre-left politicians in South Korea are incredibly sensitive to scandals. Corruption and discrimination are endemic (or, at least, are perceived to be endemic, which in politics is the same thing) and the centre-left in South Korea is basically built on an anti-corruption, anti-discrimination platform. “Common sense”, as defined by them, is not merely the rules of the political arena that they happen to be playing under, but the stated objective that they are allegedly trying to achieve.

For a centre-left politician in South Korea, being involved in a corruption scandal (as the late President Roh did) or sexual harassment scandal (as the late mayor of Seoul) is having light shine on your hypocrisy. It’s a denial of everything you’ve ever stood for. It’s to be condemned by both the public and, perhaps, by history. Even if the allegations aren’t true and you get it cleared, some doubt will always linger. All this in a country and culture where reputation and belonging are considered important.

I’d not be surprised if this is why these suicides happen, and I would not be surprised to see another high-profile centre-left suicide in the next ten or twenty years.
