Montenegro (update Serbia) possibly on verge of Civil War

So is it true. NS European members should know. Is Montenegro (MNE) possibly on the verge of a Civil War. Its seems the current leader of this small Balkan nation of 600.000 people, he has been running that small nation for 30 years, :o , is trying to create a new non-Serbian connected identity for MNE. Supposedly, MNE. has Serbian roots. Anyway to do this he is erasing anything Serbian including the Serbian Orthodox religion which is a major religion in MNE. In response to this, the people of MNE. have been protesting in the streets. The government has responded by tear gassing the protesters and by using physical force. Its getting ugly by the day.

I always though that MNE. was a tranquil happy place. But it seems there are major underlining problems which is currently bursting out.

So has anyone heard about this. Where is the EU..Why are they looking the other way when it comes to MNE. I think the people in MNE. are fed up with there leader who has been there for 30 years. They want true change. True democracy.

Found out about this via this informative video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HofBZKZIbS0

While I don’t know if it will escalate into civil war this is definitely concerning. From everything you have posted here I don’t see the situation improving any time soon.

I haven’t heard anything about what’s been going over in Montenegro in the UK. COVID and other, more internationally-“interesting” stories are what’s mainly being talked about.

Edit: Still, it’s very concerning.

I am so glad that you brought this to my attention. I have never heard a thing about Montenegro, and I second the other posters' assumptions that Montenegro was peacefully quiet. Thank you for helping me expand my knowledge of the world.

I just hope we won't have to send blue helmets to act like clowns in another UN sponsodered "peacekeeping intervention". Last time in Kosovo we had French Foreign Legion troops that couldn't even fire a single shot unless they were themselves getting shot at, and were ordered by NATO general staff to surrender whenever possible. UN involvement in the Balkans have always been an embarrassement that I'm not hyped to experience again.

'True Democracy'

It doesn't matter, either one man steals or a fluctuating racketeering cartel steals.

Wow, the population of the California county I live in has more than half that of Montenegro's.

I wasn't aware that Montenegro had such a strong Serbian identity, and it's rather alarming that they're also having civil strife during the virus as well. Since the country is so much smaller in population than I thought however, hopefully that helps keep the situation from getting too out of hand, although riots are probably the most that will happen.

If there is a civil war, hopefully the UN handles it better than they usually do.

Aren't Montenegrins culturally/ethnically close to Serbia? What's the President thinking in antagonizing the Serbian populace?

They are divided. A portion of the population is very Serb/Russian leaning, while a lot is pro western and views Serbia as a former colonial ruler.

So you have a part of the population wanting to break the Serb hold in their society and strike a new independent identity but a substantial portion that wants to keep a Serb aligned identity.

So this makes Montenegro political football in the NATO/Russia, East vs West New Cold War struggle.

The Cold War is back with a vengeance. We need to stop pretending it is not.
The world is splitting into two camps, and people are picking sides.

Trusting the UN to solve something? Lets send Stalin, hed do a better job lmao.

Also, I think Montenegro fell into a Chinese debt trap to build highways? Im not 100% sure, might have been another country.

It is a different situation in many ways, with the ideologies and powers being somewhat different (Russia is the lease power to the PRC this time) but you still have the world increasing becoming two camps fighting for influence in power. Sure many tried the non aligned thing, but for many they still got dragged in anyways.

I feel you do not see what is happening because you mean well but as a result do not want to see the harsh reality. The 90s are dead and gone and not coming back.

But for Montenegro it is already in thick. Montenegro fought off a Russian backed coup in 2016
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montenegrin_coup_plot
and joined NATO in 2016, something that was quite controversial in Montenegro.

uh huh that’s what I said

methinks the world is going in a much more multipolar/resurgent great power system direction than a new bipolar model

I feel you do not see what is happening because you mean well but as a result do not want to see the harsh reality. The 90s are dead and gone and not coming back.

“this conflict isn’t the same as that conflict”
“SO YOURE SAYING NOTHINGS WRONG AND WE’RE LIVING IN THE 90S”
well that wasn’t what I was saying but uhh alrighty!

I don’t know if I should be relieved or annoyed you thought I didn’t know abt this lol

Well when I said it was back I obviously did not mean a literal repeat, obviously. History never actually repeats, but some trends remain consistent.

But this definitely seems to big two broad camps, there are still two powers FAR stronger than the rest. Even in the 80s it was not entirely bipolar as some powers tried to strike an independent path from the big two, although usually with limited success.
So it seems it will be broadly bipolar at least in the nearer term.
The US and PRC are 40% of the entire global economy.

Regardless this does not change the fundamental issue at hand, the Montenegro is deep in the power struggles and this is part of it.
The battle between a more western aligned ruling party and a Russian aligned opposition here.

But if you are correct that it is going more multipolar/many great powers we are completely fucked.
Bipolar is more stable than multipolar. Last time we had the real multipolar deal we had two world wars. So while we must be armed to the teeth in cars it does get to that, we should still aim to keep it mostly bipolar.

Regardless grab a gun, pick your allies, build your forces and get ready for a wild and bloody ride ahead.

I haven't seen it because the news spends 99.99% of its time focusing on the newest fuckup of the dickhead president. They spend more time talking about that jackass than they do reporting actual news.

I know the UN often fails miserably in their "peacekeeping" efforts, but occasionally they fix things. But the country in debt to China is Serbia, not Montenegro.

All this because the Montenegrin government is saying "the real church of Montenegro is this virtually identical copy of the Serbian Orthodox Church, but it's authentically Montenegrin and not stinky serb shit.

I guess there's a lot of minor powers runing around, altering the path. India, Iran, Brazil, and to a Lesser extent Russia and NK are all secondary players. Also, ideology is taking a backseat to regional politics. If the old cold war ended empires, this one might be bringing them back.
