Really, socialism in the USA kinda was stomped on, spit on, dragged through the mud and thrown off a cliff when Bernie Sanders - a social democrat - called himself a socialist, and people believed it.

Isn't what you're trying to describe basically just Distributism (which in my opinion is probably more practical than socialism or communism)?
