G4 EA H1N1 (novel swine flu): Apocalypse Later?

...the Beeb reports that a new strain of swine flu (G4 EA H1N1), which bears similarities to the 2009 pandemic flu (A/H1N1pdm09) and can be inoculated against using adapted versions of current flu vaccines, has appeared in pigs in China. It can spread from pigs to humans, but the danger of person-to-person transmission - while not imminent - is possible. Many have expressed concerns about the emergence of a new strain of flu in recent weeks.

This is intended to be a catch-all thread about G4 EA H1N1 swine flu; the moratorium on coronavirus-related misinformation does not currently extend to swine flu, but I will update this OP if and when it does. Food for thought: How far could this go? (Personal opinion - one of two ways. Either this peters out and we hear nothing more about it, or it winds up spreading massively over the winter and absolutely clobbering hospitals for a few months until the vaccines can be re-engineered as appropriate.)

I put down werewolves for October (there's supposed to be a rare full moon on Halloween this year)

Full moon on Halloween? SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.
October 31st
Officially cursed
If something bad happens at the start of each season, what will hit us come the equinox? I'm going to guess WWIII.

Please let this be a lie so more people don't suffer.

Dear China,

Please stop being the source of deadly outbreaks.

Tbh werewolves would be a welcome break from everything else. Sounds much more fun than a virus.

Uh, mods aren't very keen on posters declaring their own MEGAthreads just now.

It would reflect very badly on pharmas who virtually abandoned work on SARS-1 ... work that could have been very useful against COVID-19 ... if they also abandoned work on the Swine Flu virus that could be useful against this.

Does international travel currently permit international viral transmission? I know the EU, Communist China and Iran's citizens cannot enter USA easily, but how do other country's treat Communist Chinese travelers atm?

What measures could be taken to prevent this new disease from entering your country?

No problem, I've scheduled the asteroid impact for Boxing Day.

Can't wait until we switch to boneless, disease-free cultured meat.

According to the source, we could probably adapt current vaccines to protect against it, which we absolutely should. I'm not eager for the release of 2020 Pandemic II: Oinking It Up Again when the US and other countries are still trapped in the burning wreck of a theater currently screening 2020 Pandemic.

We already have an H1N1 vaccine that was widely distributed and that is still distributed in seasonal flu vaccines IIRC.

Yeah, while this novel strain doesn't have any readily available vaccine, it seems like the production of a new one to a distribution-ready state would be much faster than Covid's.

It would be because existing vaccines already exist to combat H1N1.

Really, what I'm more concerned is how often these new viruses pops up. Can the globalized economy really sustain this? Especially as technology progresses, genetic engineering will become more accessible, leading to the emergence of bioterrorism. When the planes crashes into the twin towers, US was terrified and angry, sure. But it did not cause the entire global economy to stumble into minus growth.
