Where Would You Live Based Solely on Geography and Climate?

Postby Page » Tue Jun 23, 2020 11:46 pm

If you could live anywhere based solely on geography and climate, ignoring politics, nationality, language, and danger, where would you go? For example, if you like mountains and chose Afghanistan, there is no Taliban out to get you. If you like West Africa, there is no Ebola and no civil war. You don't have to learn a new language or go through an immigration process, you just pick somewhere to live where you like the weather. (The real world population is the same, so if you choose to live up in the mountains you don't get to live in a big city, if you choose Antarctica you have to live in a research station, etc.)

I would choose La Paz in Baja California Sur, Mexico, because it meets my top 3 criteria: Warm weather throughout the year, lots of sunshine, and proximity to the ocean.

Central Europe. Or more specifically, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
I fancy the idea of skiing down the Alps, and visiting the mystical fairytale-like forests.
Also I'm bored of an all-summer year cuz I live right above the equator. Since my family's financial situation isn't quite good my chances of travelling there are low.

I crave summer because I moved from Florida to Germany a few years ago and now I only get 3 reliably warm months instead of 9.

I do appreciate the hot weather and all, but living in Singapore is like living on a frying pan.
I can't really say anything, since I've only ever been to Singapore, but I would like to see how it's like living in a temperate country.

Being the numbers freak I am, I actually devised a formula for grading climates of various places in the world based on how well they fit my ideal, and the highest-scoring place I've evaluated out of over 700 is Ho, Ghana. The city is a bit too small for my tastes, but the weather is amazing.

Second place is Felipe Carrillo Puerto, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It's a smallish town of only 25,000 people, but at least it's away from that state's huge seas of tourists (that's the same state as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, etc.). Including all the other factors beyond geography and climate, I would much rather live in Mexico than Ghana; I actually would like to move to Mérida in a few years.

Bali island's a great location then, which is also my choice. Monsoon season aren't a problen (afaik), far from potential tsunami, top tier beaches (especially the less well-known ones), and its terrain can even sustain great agriculture. Hell, it's already a great place to live right now (from social and economic PoV) due to Hindu majority and vast amount of liberalism-spreading white Australians.

Damn, Ho actually does have amazing weather according to that wikipedia page.

Me, I've always thought that the Middle East would have been really cool were it not for all the wars and autocracy and such. Hot, sunny, mostly dry, scenic mountains, breathtaking ocean views. Not to mention all of the history packed there, I'd never run out of ancient temples, statues, inscriptions in mountainsides, cities as old as civilisation itself, palaces ... to go and see. And of course the food's good too.

Only problem is that I've grown to quite like having some rain here and there too (damn British weather influences!). So possibly shift the location to be somewhere in Turkey.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

I. Hate. Hot. Weather.
Literally is 19-22 ºC here, right now (66-70ºF) and I'm freaking dying.

So, probably Central Europe is way too hot for my taste. I'll go for the Northern Europe.
Generally talking, Scotland and Ireland are the most similar places to my Homeland, the Celtic culture, geography, hydrography, fauna and flora. The buildings. Everything very similar to what I already know.
But much better, because their weather is less warm, more rainy, less sun. And the best of all: colder.

Totally! The Middle East-North Africa region to me is probably among the most interesting in the world. So much awesome history and culture, and for the most part nice weather too! It is a shame there's so much fighting and autocracy and fundamentalism; otherwise I could see myself doing quite well in some city along the coast of Tunisia or Lebanon or something.
