Every year it's like endless thundering for a month in my area. Warren mayor Jim Fouts banned fireworks at certain times of night a few years ago.

They're coming from these places called "fireworks stores".

Why now? You have to ask?? Let's see: a pandemic and associated quarantines and "social distancing", social unrest, the first arrival of hot weather in parts of the US, and oh, as a result of one or more of those, many cities cancelling their own professional fireworks displays. So, um, people are bored, and looking for entertainment... as your linked articles mention.

We in Illinois get them from Indiana. There's a bunch of fireworks shops along the state border that direct ads towards the Illinois side. We might not be able to buy them in-state but police don't seem to pay mind to using them unless you set something on fire or blow a finger off.

There are a lot of people out of work and a subsidy if you are unemployed of an extra $600 a paycheck. The subsidy is more than some of the part-time people earn when they are working. A lot of poor unemployed people with money that they cannot spend socially. Thus you get extra fireworks all over the place. People are spending their food money on fireworks...

Philly here. Can confirm endless, endless fireworks. Yet, as was stated above, it's really hard to determine whether it's actually an increase from normal summers.

When the riots began here, conspiracy theories raged regarding the mysterious explosions which would last all night long. People thought it was gunfire, or folks blowing their way into locked businesses or ATMs, or the police barraging the communities with recorded explosion noises, or, the most recent conspiracy, government agents flooding the cities with fireworks to terrorize the populations which are continuing to protest.

Personally, I think heightened nerves explain a lot. There's probably an uptick in the use of fireworks, but it's probably due to folks dealing with their anxiety, their cabin fever, and getting outside for the cool nights after the heat of the day. Also, folks are much more sensitive to their presence, for all of the same reasons.

However, I will say: those explosions directly following the riots really were pretty suspicious. They sounded little like a normal firework and much more like some sort of explosive device. Perhaps everyone was using up their stashes of m80s, first...

It is purely anecdotal, but a fireworks salesman says he has been swiping red cards all day. I am going to use false premises on this one. Fireworks, protests, weed, and video games. What a mix. Lock yourself in all day.

Yep. And here I am in South Philly. I really wish they had never legalized the things. They're an absolute menace in close living conditions, where your walls are so thin you can hear folks' conversations as they pass by on the sidewalk.

I wish they would also do something about the motorcycles and dirtbikes and those stupid 3-wheeler moped thingies. They may be worse than the fireworks. There has to be some way to enforce noise regulations on those damn things...
