You know what is just painful to hear? The fact that this guy Schliemann, who uncovered the historical site of Troy, used fucking TNT in the excavation process and blew part of it up. Just hearing that makes me cringe in ungodly ways.

Archaeology was still kinda new in those days so early archaeologists tended to do reckless shit like that.

Not really no. He wasn't well regarded in his day either honestly. Archaeological really came about during the enlightenment but Schliemann was well beyond that point.

He blew up part of an historical site with TNT. I think that is quite sensible grounds for him not being very well regarded.

He was a grave robber who blew up an ancient city (well several on the same spot) and smuggled out the gold to make himself rich.

So he was an IRL René Belloq?

In the films Belloq is shown to some degree care about archaeology the same way as Jones. They're both more of treasure hunters but the only real difference is Belloq is working with the Nazis.

No? Someone else knew were it was and already found the site. That guy just didn't have the funds or time. The story of Schliemann going against the odds to find the Mythical Troy is a story made up, by Schliemann.

Very possible, it's not what I learned, but in stuff like this you do tend to know what you are talking about

Schliemann is important in the history of archaeology don't get me wrong, but his greatness and ingenuity are vastly overstated. An eccentric with a passion who really should have just paid someone else to do the work for him.

Also the smuggling gold part, he was a wild man to say the least. Honestly the real him was far more interesting then the stories he made up about himself.
