After “Goblet of Fire”, that series went somewhere very dark. Very dark. And sad. But it was also a series that grew with the readers. A hardening of the tale was perhaps inevitable to appeal to an older audience.
When I worked in childcare and parents were letting their kids read the Harry Potter books, I always made sure to bring up that the first three books are suitable for kids and warned that starting with the 4th book things get darker and are better for teens.
I think J.K. genuinely started the series out as a children's series but then halfway it turned into YA fiction, the likes of Twilight or the Hunger Games.
