After “Goblet of Fire”, that series went somewhere very dark. Very dark. And sad. But it was also a series that grew with the readers. A hardening of the tale was perhaps inevitable to appeal to an older audience.

When I worked in childcare and parents were letting their kids read the Harry Potter books, I always made sure to bring up that the first three books are suitable for kids and warned that starting with the 4th book things get darker and are better for teens.

I think J.K. genuinely started the series out as a children's series but then halfway it turned into YA fiction, the likes of Twilight or the Hunger Games.

Is that the one where Big D dies?

Anyway, yeah, the last half of the series just gets utterly depressing, the last book is a fucking slog.

Yeah it is.

The last few books have been a wild ride. 4 seemed to go from zero to 100 the second Harry and Cedric were teleported to the cemetery. 5 made me want to scream; I don’t think I’ve ever hated a fictional character as much as I did Umbridge. And 6 had a very depressing ending.

I’m not sure I’m ready for 7.

A good warning to make. The first three books are indeed child friendly, while the last books starting from the 4th installment do become darker and less suited to younger audiences.

I started the series while a uni student, around 18-19 years old, circa 1998-1999, and read the last book around 2007-2008, I think? I was, what? 26-27 years old? Even I found it dark.

I mean

the last book featured a war and like half the characters die, not to mention wasn't the Ministry of Magic trying to genocide all muggle born wizards and witches?

That noble cuisine, that fine combining of crispy battered fish and chunky chips -- basically the best food Britain has -- how darest thou!

In all seriousness, I do like fish and chips. But not in newspaper (attack by seagull is all to common; those things have no fear). But inside a nice fish and chip restaurant -- one that I know has both a good reputation and does gluten free batter -- they can be lovely.

It helped that Imelda Staunton is quite a good actress. I loved her in the Downton Abbey movie. Funnily enough, she played a character in that one who was also at odds with Dame Maggie Smith's character.

I'm yet to see the Downton Abbey movie. It's on my list of things I have got to see but haven't gotten 'round to.

Agree on Imelda Staunton; I've never seen her play a bad role -- fantastic Mama Rose, in Gypsy (seriously, chills!). One film of hers' that I'd recommend to almost anyone is Vera Drake: a quiet film directed by Mike Leigh, but she's wonderful in that role. Or, at the lighter end of the spectrum, Victoria Wood's That Day We Sang.

I like how in Downton Abbey it's shown that lords and ladies can (and do) treat their servers with honour and respect

I have seen the entire series and the movies, it's quite fascinating
