If someone could tell me why I had to be born when I was, just to see a year like this one, that would be great. I'm not the sort of person who has the courage necessary to manage this kind of year, and defend democracy in a pandemic, and so on.

I'd encourage you to try. Taking action, be it in the form of volunteering, of registering voters, or even in peaceful protest can be intimidating, but when you're older you might look back on your attempts to do so and smile, knowing that you tried.
