Lord Paget, then the Earl of Uxbridge, was a commander at Waterloo under Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. Near the end of the battle one of the last French cannon shots ripped past Arthur Wellesley after which Uxbridge exclaimed, "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!"
