I just get the impression that Thanos really needed something (more precisely someone) else to focus his attention on. Sense a lot of tension from him and he is lashing out in the weirdest way possible.

He got there at Infinity War, but really he should've started with that.

Then we open in an alternate reality Avengers where things are weird and they slowly learn about their past adventures through the McGuffin or some character who avoided it somehow.
