Washington & Jefferson Statue Get Pulled Down

While I fully support going after the statues of confederates and of slavers during times of strong abolition movements, going after founding fathers is likely to just cause a backlash. This move is ill-advised.

Not even against more awareness of Jefferson's hypocrisy on the subject (publically condemned slavery yet had many of them), but hes still generally a beloved founder of the nation and the third president.

Anyone who could be "driven" to white supremacy was already a white supremacist, just afraid to admit it. Let's rig explosives to it and blow it up." No one did that. Instead it was turned into a memorial for the lives lost there and tours are given of it as a remembrance for the evils that went on there.

You dislike a statue? Sign a petition to have it moved to a museum and stop acting like a dickhead. These people are so focused on just destroying statues that they don't realize its self defeating. No one will remember the history of racism in 200 years if you destroy anything remotely connected to racism.

This is the age of the Internet. Even if we took this absurd slippery slope as true (in which case you should probably get better examples, because Huckleberry Finn is an anti-racist book), there’s no way to destroy massively disseminated knowledge.

The logic is that statues are public celebrations of the person depicted, and the public don't want to celebrate racist slaveowners any more, therefore statue comes down. "Next we burn Huckleberry Finn" does not follow from that position because fucking why would it?

Almost all of the statues will be destroyed one way or another. Museum's don't want them, the people living near them don't want them, the municipal governments don't want to have to take care of them after being taken down. They'll be sent to some back lot to be forgotten about until they rust away, are melted down, or are just thrown away.
