But there's a lot I see in the everyday that I would consider to be common enough and distinctive enough to be American culture, like hamburgers, rock n' roll, individualism, American football, etc.

Americans and immigrants who have assimilated into American culture, in most instances, are going to have a good deal more in common with each other than with people from else-where. Americans who deny the existence of their own culture are the same sorts of people who will insist that they don't have an accent when that accent is painfully obvious to anyone who isn't an American.
