Are Afrikaners African?

Are white Americans true Americans? Because, I mean, we weren't the first ones there.

People living on either of the Americas are Americans, not necessarily of Indigenous American heritage.

White people from the USA are Americans not predominately of indigenous American heritage.

There's a Zimbabwean joke about a White farmer. He goes up to the immigration official in Beitbridge and the Saffer is looking over his defunct Rhodesian passport. So the Saffer asks the Farmer, "What's your nationality?" The Farmer thinks for a moment before answering, "Well I grew up in Kenya in the Highlands, I farmed in Zambia, was a British Citizen during Federation, had the vote In Rhodesia, and have lived in Zimbabwe for a decade. Well quite, part of the issue, and weirdly non-white people in the US and UK get this but you have the question 'but where are you originally from?', when I answer I'm from HK. So, fine, I say I was born in the UK but then they use that as a reference to talk about the UK.

Thing is.. I know bugger all about the UK, I don't even know where various places are, I left when I was 3 years old.. it's just, it's boring really.

I know Asian Brits who get this, even though their family has been there for generations, 'where are you originally from?', and when they finally say, India for example, people are all 'oh I love Indian food', and then even might mention a dish that didn't even originate in India, it originated in the UK.

Like, lemon chicken in Chinese restaurants.. few in China would recognise that as a dish.

I have been relentlessly questioned about my origin two times, and find it very strange. One person could not place my dialect/accent, and another thought that all redheads were Irish (then guessed Russian for some reason). It must be annoying to happen relatively often.

I always have an issue with 'where are you from', or 'what is your nationality'.. I was born in the UK, brought up in South Africa and lived in HK for the majority of my life.. to be honest I find the question annoying, it kind of provides a reference point for people I know but it also comes loaded with assumptions that detract from, basically, who I am.

Am I really a Hong Konger or just a Malaysian pretending to be one? Am I from HK or Malaysia? Does the couple of years I studied and voted in the UK make me British in any way?

Being a Third Culture Kid has its pitfalls. We don't really know where we truly belong.

In HK, we have Hong Kongers of Indian descent who are born and bred in the city, attend local schools as children, and speak fluent Cantonese. They are typically stateless and unable to leave the territory because the racist HK government doesn't give a shit about them. I had one Indian classmate from high school who claimed to be a Hong Kong citizen. This probably doesn't sound too implausible.

I myself am a Malaysian Chinese who considers myself to be Malaysian first, although I remain more loyal to HK than to either China or Malaysia. I will never submit to Beijing. The minorities in my country can all legitimately be called Malaysians no matter how much the racist Malay and Muslim supremacists in charge like to pretend otherwise.

Similarly, Afrikaners are legitimately Africans no matter how much the racist black supremacists in the ANC, the EFF, and ZANU-PF like to pretend otherwise. One doesn't have to be black to qualify as African, else the Egyptians and Maghrebians would be excluded.

You're either born there, or you've become a citizen there and taken on the culture. So of course Afrikaaners are African.

I find that a country like, say, France seems to take a more definitive line on being born there makes them French, whereas the UK seems to be more about anyone joining in the culture and becoming a citizen makes them British. That doesn't mean that the British culture subsumes the entrant. Rather it's a melting pot, where extra good points are added to the mix. I for one would see Britain the poorer without the social influences (especially food!) from those who have joined us.

As for the suggestion of Anglo-Africans.. or for that matter the similar African-Americans... does that make me Viking-British because some raiders came over umpteen hundred years back? Of course not. Most countries are a complete mix of ethnic and racial backgrounds, all mixed up. The most anyone can claim is that they're 'pure mongrel'. It has nothing to do with blood, skin colour or any other pointless attribute.

Afrikaners aren’t Anglo. Some would probably punch you for calling them Anglo, but I can’t say for certain because I personally don’t know any Afrikaners.

No they arent anglo. The English sent them to concentration camps. The Afrikaaners are Dutch with some German and French in their heritage. Their language is like an offshoot of Dutch.
