Survey - STEM workers and men exhibit more autistic traits.

Postby Petrolheadia » Sat Jun 13, 2020 2:32 pm

So I just stumbled upon the results of an autism spectrum quotient survey that showed some social imbalance when it comes to the scores.

The average male AQ was 21.6, while the average female one was 19.0. Similarly, the average STEM worker had 21.9 points, while the non-STEM one had 18.9.

What do you think about this?

Personally I find these results quite believable, given that most people on the spectrum I know are men, and all these men are in STEM stuff.

What exactly is AQ?

What are 'autistic traits' of those who are not autistic?

Well, autism is not an on-off thing, but a collection of factors that, if coupled together and strong enough, make a person classified as autistic.

One can have autistic traits and not be autistic.

I don't think it's fair to say that autistic people are inherently more inclined to be into STEM. Just as an anecdotal example, I'm autistic and my interests have geared more towards the humanities than hard science - I'm currently doing a film studies degree at university. Autistic people can have 'special interests' in anything, not just STEM.

That article lists "I am fascinated by numbers" as an example of an autistic trait used in the study, which, I mean... of course defining autistic behaviour by criteria like that is going to skew the results towards people in STEM, come on man...

In other news, people who listen to mumble rap and only mumble rap tend to exhibit Low IQs. This and more on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.

I’m not that surprised. I think it’s already been established that men and STEM workers tend to score higher anyway.

Btw, in case anyone is curious, I took the test and scored a 34, though I’ve never officially been diagnosed.

There's not much disparity between the two in either cases on which a significant difference between the numbers of males and females who have demonstrated autistic traits can be made.

I've been suspected of being autistic even though I took a diagnostic test which proved otherwise (my score was 12), and a subsequent psychoanalysis which concluded within fifteen minutes, based on how I interacted with a third party at the analysis, that I wasn't autistic.
At the time, I was having to put up with an awfully arrogant occupational therapist who told me the opinions of psychologists were irrelevant; she and 'other people' had seen 'social awkwardness' evince itself, and that if I didn't accept these were problems, and her indispensable role in solving them, I would find myself unable to reach my fullest potential. The silly trout didn't realise the outward behaviour which she referred to in my interactions with her and her ilk was actually a restrained resentful anger, an anger at their humanist tendencies to imagine problems and to interfere in the lives of the people who apparently have them, and an angry resentment of boredom, which I tend to get around stupid people.

I’m not surprised on men suffering of autism. I’ve noticed that far more males do tend to suffer autism in larger numbers compared to females.

In other news, water is wet.

Autism currently affects men at a rate four times higher than women, although this may be slightly skewed because of the way autism affects women differently than it does men which makes it harder to diagnose.

Whatever this means for STEM workers, I think stigmatization of autism is a big problem on its own in general regardless of profession or industry. Though I suppose then the responsibility may be greater for the STEM fields and schools to take a lead in combating stigma, providing education, etc.

generally in STEM there's less stigma surrounding autism because so many people in it are autistic. I'd really rather not see a bunch of posters saying "autistic lives matter" and such around my college campus, thanks. So patronizing.

Autism often has different traits in men than it does in women. I'm guessing this survey was going based on the traits more commonly found in men.

From personal experience I would say that there are quite a lot of women with higher levels of autistic traits amongst library professionals.
