Rebuilding the police from the ground up would be very different from “the police” that currently patrol American cities. The anarchists have probably been most organized on the left in terms of militia-like structures.

What about what’s going on there is particularly unsustainable? The only thing that’ll happen is eventually everyone will get bored/tired and go home— I think it’s pretty clear that if the cops try to go back to the “just gas them” style of operations, they’ll just be bringing more people into the streets

If I recall correctly, President Grant did something like that in the 70s against the Klan, and then proceeded to smash them with federal troops.

Provisions of that same Federal Act still exist today and give power against groups "violating the constitutional rights of American citizens."
