Why?

The whole endeavor is obnoxious. I get the impression that these folks are not keen on establishing any kind of long-term order to account for their urban vulnerability (i.e. no farmland, therefore no consistent food source).

the food source is they walk to the fucking stores and buy food like anyone else in the city lmao it's not under siege and it's not going to be any time soon

also most of the """residents""" are either:

- protesters/activists who live in other parts of the city and drive to Capitol Hill or camp there (Seattle is a very low density city and the dense areas like capitol hill are full of the second sort of person I'm abt to describe)
- random Amazon yuppies who live in the tony hipster-ish apartment buildings that are inside the zone and probably are just working from home and were wondering what all those loud noises were a few nights ago

Are they going to dismantle capitalism in Seattle anytime soon?

I must now check if Amazon has recreational McNukes, or the tools to build them.

Well they just declared autonomy clearly getting their own water is part of the deal.

Or did they declare autonomy without the people who actually live their's consent ?

Yes, it is a protest, but have they given any indication of returning power to the Seattle government? If not, it is more than a protest.

Other than the fact your article is behind a paywall, it's also an opinion piece as stated below the title.

They haven't declared autonomy at all.

That's a meme.

THE SEATTLE GOVERNMENT HAS LITERALLY ALL THE POWER. Police and emergency services can still go in! Business is being conducted as usual! People have freedom of movement!

Maybe, just maybe, the city is choosing not to escalate things and turn this into a besieger-besieged dynamic because that would actually be a way bigger disruption for everyone and risk having serious consequences, and this is in fact a pretty harmless thing that they're letting go because it is, as I just said, harmless. Yes, they could roll back in with SWAT teams and the Nat'l. Guard and tear gas, but why?

no they named themselves something that everyone understands is not literal

Or did they declare autonomy without the people who actually live their's consent ?

ding ding ding! As I, you know, literally JUST said, the people occupying the area mostly don't live there (though I think most of the people who live there are pretty much fine with it, since as I've also said, they're literally not hurting anyone or anything)

it's part meme, part protest/mutual aid center, and everything was fine till the far right in other parts of the country heard about it, decided it was the Paris Commune reborn, and is now whipping up a media frenzy of fabrication and insanity that might just have the unfortunate consequence of putting pressure of local officials to needlessly escalate a situation that in fact demands zero urgency or violence

And then if things get escalated CHAZ would probably exercise their second amendment rights and form a... militia.

I'm guessing like three people would and would end up getting a bunch of people needlessly shot

in conclusion everyone stop talking shit and spreading lies abt my fuckin hometown, everything here is fine and the ridiculous bunch of hacks in the right wing media who are hysterically saying we're going full metal 1917 are doing so for their own financial interests, not bc they give a shit abt things here

and as we all know, last time around, the Occupy protests brought the nation to its knees and nearly toppled our 200-whatever-year-old-constitutional republic overnight-

oh, wait

It seems pretty plausible to me the way you describe it.

Meanwhile both rightist and communists have an interest in heavily extragrating and whipping up a media frenzy over it for their own purposes and make it all around bigger and more dramatic than it is.

Yeah there's definitely a couple (mostly white lol) syndie types who're there who like, genuinely think they ARE the Paris Commune reborn... but they're not hurting anyone (very much unlike the Paris Commune lol) so it's no skin off anyone's back to let them LARP while random activists give their speeches and protesters mill around

but in fact "barricade" =/= "revolutionary commune"
