Calling it an autonomous zone sounds like it was deliberately chosen to maximize publicity if this is true.

I mean there is something happening- the streets are barricaded and the cops have abandoned East Precinct, but it's not like some kind of no-go zone like we used to hear about in the French banlieus when Breitbart had that moral panic a few years back. There's consistently crowds milling around, speakers talking, I heard the other night they watched some movies. They have some tents with food and water and medical supplies set up here and there. You can walk in and out and no one will give you any shit
But if this is qualifying to people as some sort of insurrectionist commune, then like... I guess we better suppress every youth soccer tournament in America too lol

it started getting called that literally because someone wrote "welcome to free capitol hill" or something on one of the barricades and then people on twitter just sorta came to a consensus, but yes, it's being treated as a media circus (especially by right-wing fearmongers who seem to think we're in full Red Paris mode over here, you can thank KOMO and their Sinclaire Group owners for a lot of that tbh)
