My sister walked through the CHAZ. She said it reminded her of Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. What failed here is that they did not prepare any basic services at the level which is needed, fire, police, and medical. They kicked them all out without any proper alternative. This is often the failure of anarchistic type ventures.
When the gang bangers showed up as they do, without proper training, they could not handle them. The gangs stole and tried to burn down a building. If they let the police in, they probably could have handled it properly. But, on principal, they would not let the police in. The hard liners kind of messed up. Same goes with the fire department and the hospital.
Complete and total lack of preparation in terms of infrastructure. Good at destroying infrastructure, but don't have the ability to replace the infrastructure.
Thus, the inevitable happens, when situations arise like they need the fire department and the hardliners try and prove they don't need a fire department, they can take care of it. It falls apart, people get hurt, nastiness ensues. This is a weakness of many "autonomous zones." or other type of protests. They want to be more than a protest, but prove they are not capable of doing it themselves.
