I have heard from a co-worker from Russia say that they serve potatoes in everything in Russia, even at McDonalds there (like, in non-French-fries form)

and that you can also get vodka from fast food restaurants

I don't know if its true or not; that particular co-worker came from Moscow I believe

In the US my favourite fast food place was Taco Bell. They opened a Taco Bell in New Zealand and it was just awful - double the price and half the size and it didn't taste quite right either.

On a related note, I was surprised to find that Burger King is actually edible in the US. In NZ I avoid it like the plague - I've had food poisoning one too many times from it.

Best fast food in New Zealand I'd probably say is KFC, as long as it's not in Auckland. My visits to KFCs in other countries were... bizarre. The weirdest KFC I ever went to was in Russia, but that's a whole nother story...

The one place I can rely on when I travel is Carls Jr - they're not amazing, but they're consistent and they're consistent across countries too. McDonald's is consistent too but... consistently crap.

Wow I'm hearing a LOT about Taco Bell on this thread.

And yet... I... I don't know whether to recommend it or not because I... I... I have never tried it.

If you do, make sure you have a bathroom nearby.

KFC, just because its near my local supermarket.

But what's 'fast food'? Are street foods included? The very popular crushed chicken, MSG-drenched cuanki instant meatball bowl, and cakue fried breads (whose sauce are colored with textile paint) are far cheaper and faster than ordinary western-style fast food, so does that count?

I'm not sure personally. But here's one definition:

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale and with a strong priority placed on "speed of service" versus other relevant factors involved in culinary science. Fast food was originally created as a commercial strategy to accommodate the larger numbers of busy commuters, travelers and wage workers who often did not have the time to sit down at a public house or diner and wait for their meal. By making speed of service the priority, this ensured that customers with strictly limited time (a commuter stopping to procure dinner to bring home to their family, for example, or an hourly laborer on a short lunch break) were not inconvenienced by waiting for their food to be cooked on-the-spot (as is expected from a traditional "sit down" restaurant).

... Although a vast variety of food can be "cooked fast", "fast food" is a commercial term limited to food sold in a restaurant or store with frozen, preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away.

I don't know how much this helps. Its from the wikipedia page on fast food.

This questions depends on what counts as fast food or not (for instance does Chinese-American Food count as fast food?). However, going with the classic (from my perspective) drive through fast food options (McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, KFC, Pop-Eyes, Sonic, Checkers/Ralleys, Long John Silvers, Hardees, Arby's, Roy Rogers, Panda Express, and I will add Subway, Five Guys, and Chipotle, though I am probably missing so many), I would have to choose Chick-Fil-A.

I would suggest getting a poll up, except there are too many options for a poll.

I did find this wikipedia page that list fast food restaurants in the U.S., https://www.wikiwand.com/en/List_of_res ... /Fast_food

Interesting...

Are they better in some ways would you say?

Why do you avoid chains? Or is it just incidental?

Generally their veggies and their bread are better than chains' , at least here. Not that chains' stuff sucks (food safety standards are rather high here), but small places usually buy less stuff and more often. My local kebab shop also bakes its own bread on the spot, which is lovely.

I rarely eat fast food, but if it strikes my fancy, Taco Bell. I mean, where else can you wolf down four crunchy tacos in a haze of bad decisions for only like 7 bucks.

It's beautiful.

Greasy, really quite cheap tasting tacos. But, it's one of the few things that you know is cheap in quality that still tastes pretty damn good.

Plus, it has a reputation as a haven for inebriated undergrads in the states, owing to its price, late night hours and easiness to slam down after a long night. Can't be beat, though I couldn't eat it all the time. I'd die.
